I think theres a potential market for Cabaret at the moment but they really need to get the casting right for it to make a substantial impact - get it right, it will be brilliant but get it wrong and it could be a disaster. I'm glad that Martine McCutheon and Denise Van Outen are not in the frame for Sally Bowles - supposedly at least. I just dont understand the logic about James Dreyfus - i mean, why on earth?!
I can't wait until this thing get's up and running so we can see how it turns out.
"Dont look at me that way
Your ears and your eyes
Got used to the lies
But you're getting the truth today"
"Ah the city. So many lights you can actually pretend one of them is shining on you."
CLIFF: "There was a cabaret and there was a master of ceremonies and there was a city called Berlin in a country called Germany - and it was the end of the world and I was dancing with Sally Bowles - and we were both fast asleep"
I think Anna Maxwell Martin will be fantastic, but like you i'm not sold on James Dreyfuss. Its a shame that we are not getting thae Sam Mendes version. In saying that Rufus Thomas may well surpise up all.
I did see the Donmar version with Jane Horrocks, but this was extremely stripped down compared to the broadway version. It did work on a different level though. I love Jane Horrocks but i didnt warm to her as Sally Bowles.
Thought the Sam Mendes Donmar production - before it went to Broadway - was superb. Truly superb.
Yup it was a "stripped down" production... but I thought that was its appeal... it focused so much on the performances and the plot with out anything un-necessary getting in the way and distracting the audience!
Its just a shame it didn't run in London longer or as long as it did on Broadway.
