Should RENT have a parental advisory sticker on the CD label?- Page 2

Personally, I think the Parental Advisory stickers are stupid. If a parent wants to know what's appropriate for their kinds to listen to, they should research the item, and find out what contenet is exactly on the CD. Then, they can decide on thier own terms whether it's appropriate for their kids instead of letting a sticker tell them what to do.

"Contact" is much more tastefull than "You Can Be as Loud as the Hell You Want." And it's not like kids haven't heard the word "****" before.

I don't think RENT should have a parental advisory sticker. RENT isn't really THAT bad.

In all fairness, if we're just going by the content, then RENT should have a parental advisory sticker. But since it's not really possible to be marketed to a younger audience, it's not really necessary. Avenue Q got one because it's easy for parents to pick up the CD for their kids without knowing what it's about and then you get something like "The Internet is for Porn" and everyone gets sued. I do think, though, that cast albums just fall under the radar of the parental advisory stuff because no one associates sex or swearing with a Broadway musical.

Yeah but also, although I have nothing wrong with it, it DOES have some racial content ect. I mean I don't see Rent being very offensive to many people the way that Avenue Q COULD be.

mostly everyone when buying a cd looks at the songs on the back although i do have the rent double disk nd the song list is inside but most cd's have the song names on the back nd if ma parents were to buy me one they would look at the songs so i meen like q there r a few songs on there u can tell isnt appropriate by the titles so its another story and i agree with the puppets being family nd lyk kid like but its not even close

No. *prepares to beat the dead horse* Firstly, its not a family friendly show, so therefore a parent isn't normally going to have their young children hear it.

Secondly, Avenue Q has puppets, which most people would associate with Sesame Street and all those other kid friendly shows. Trust me, there ARE people who probably wouldn't read the track listing.

Thirdly, "parental advisory," as far as I've seen, mainly deals with how certain context is used and how much is used within it. Did anyone else hear about the parents who sued Wal-Mart over false advertising because an Evanescence album featured questionable language, but no sticker? There are many more CDs without one (Green Day, for example- I have a lot of their stuff, but some of the albums don't have the PA sticker just because they utter "f***" once). Rent, does not need one.

ETA: About Contact...have you ever heard any late 90s pop artists' albums? I have heard far WORSE lyrics from those, and my mother still let me listen to them.

No, I don't believe that it shouldn't. The language, firstly, isn't that strong enough. The usage of f*** and s*** are used as terms of disappointment. It is in no way, shape, or form used in a derogatory matter (that includes the "muthaf***ing artists!" line. If you ask me, that is no more harsh than normal rush hour sentiments.)

As for Contact- first off, a young kid wouldn't realize what they were talking about. Secondly, Contact isn't as bad, context wise, as some pop songs I've heard.

Do I think a young child should listen to Rent? No. However, if they got older, I would need to know the maturity of said child. Hey, my 13 year old sister loves Rent, but hates Contact- she just skips over it.

ETA (again): As for your reasons citing Hair for having a label because of "Hashish, cocaine, sodomy": Are those even reasons to put an advisory label on Rent, because they only talk about characters doing heroin or homosexual relationships (which, btw you don't even get much of in terms of sex...only Contact)

I don't think it should because most of the younger people who want it are in their teens because they read about the show and want to hear the music. It's not like 10 year olds are going to look for Rent, and most of them don't have the money for the CD set.

I think it should, but as My Fair Lady said, you can kind of tell from the outside that it's not exactly a children's show...

Ehh- I'm 14 and I bought the CD a couple months ago and fell in love with it. I knew what it was about though. My mom, however, hates when I play it *which is quite often* because of the language but I don't think a sticker is required. I'm insane- I will dish out $35 for the double disk, but I know most people I know wouldn't. However- it is a great CD and honestly, we all know those words anyway *innocent grin*.
