I think that the OBC (1975) of Chicago is one of the most well documented recordings of a show. The tempos are the way they should be. The performances are great and the orchestrations sound right out of vaudeville.
No Strings OBC (1962) is another great recording documenting some of Richard Rodgers lesser known masterpieces from his only music and lyrics show. It documents the jazzy sound and great performances well.
But I'd have to give the greatest cast recording award to something rather unexpected. No it isn't my favorite musical, no it isn't the greatest ever written. I do like it though and it is good- Wicked. It just documents most of the music in the show, is well produced and is performed wonderfully.

Well, QMAN03, the list was actually called "Basic Librray of Cast Albums" so if you looked for "Best Show Recordings" it might not have shown up. Oh well, at least you tried... here it is:

The question comes up here often as to cast albums of "classic" shows that belong in every basic collection. I compiled this listing for Public Libraries several years ago and have updated it to share it with you.

This list does not include any of the currently running Broadway shows.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

My faves, in no particular order:

City of Angels
Mack and Mabel (the score is great - too bad the show has never lived up to the music)
La Cage Aux Folles
Ragtime (one of the all-time greats)
Putting It Together (Julie Andrews cast)
Into the Woods (original cast)
A Little Night Music (original cast)

and the one that has been taking up residence in my CD player since its delivery,

Dessa Rose

I have so many others, but these are the ones that seem to get played regularly.
