I must insist on Into The Woods since it will get you started on Sondheim and it's, arguably, his most accessible. His stuff is the real 'meat and potatos' of musical theatre.

Since you need to become familiar with the classics, I must also insist on:

West Side Story
Gypsy
My Fair Lady
Cabaret
South Pacific

... as a good foundation to start with. You can probably find these in any library. Good Luck!

"And yes, Christian Borle is on the Spamalot cast recording. :)"

HE IS? Amazing- see i discover new stuff everyday.

Anyway, austengirl, glad you found Broadway! Just wanted to say that if you identified a certain kind of musical that takes your particular fancy, you could delve more into similar genres. For instance, I really liked Light in the Piazza and kinda more classical sounding musicals; and from there I discovered Oklahoma, My Fair Lady etc.

Take your time, there are plenty to discover!!! Knock yourself out!

This also might help. About 2 years ago I put together a listing of suggested cast albums I would consider the core or any collection. It doesn't take in current or recent shows but does cover 100 titles from 1900 to 2000 (or so.)

For a fantastic oveview of the 20th century of Broadway musicasl pick up Ken Bloom & Frank Vlastnik's bool BROADWAY MUSICALS: THE 101 GREATEST SHOWS OF ALL TIME. One might quibble with some of the choices, the excellent photos (many in colour) will draw you into this book for hours on end. It has just been reissued in softcover and availble from Amazon:

For a CD overview try Broadway: THe American Musical, a 5-CD collection inspired by the 6-hour PBS special. The program (which is out on DVD) is well worth seeing.

Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!

I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

I actually just posted in the wrong thread...sorry!

But thanks for the list of music, I made sure I bookmarked it on my computer.

I was just wondering how often they put Broadway shows out on dvd. I was thinking of what I might find on Netflix. Seems like back in the 80's or 90's I remember Les Mis being out on VHS.

That's a concert so it's not really like seeing the show.

And, sadly, not too often. Legally, anyway.

Jimmy, what are you doing here in the middle of the night? It's almost 9 PM!

My personal favorites are

Rent, In the heights, Spring Awakening, and Miss Saigon.

WIth In the Heights and Miss Saigon, if you listen to them all the way through, you'll pretty much get the story. for any storylines, just google "{{name of show}} synopsis"

It really said US Navy, but hey, I worked with what they gave me ok.
