i suppose male belters are those who have great, rock sound with great volume that's NOT operatic in any way, I guess it's hard to explain?!
Men can certainly "mix". Seth Riggs teaches this and I actually took a master class from him a few years ago. It is the same idea, trying to connect your voices so it sounds like one voice with no break. It is VERY hard to do but if you practice it becomes easier, like with most things:) I found that it is easier to learn to "mix" singing on certain vowels. Once it is mastered you can sing all over the place and nobody can tell when you've started blending in some head tones....Gavin Creel is a great example of this technique.
He's a vocal teacher. He used to specialize in the "mixing" technique but I'm not sure what he does now. He taught some pretty famous singers (Streisand). His technique is great for musical theater singers in my opinion. As you've read on this thread mixing CAN help you sound like you're belting when really you aren't. It is more healthy than pushing everything from your chest. Also, because actors sing 8 shows a week it is better to not stress your voice time and time again by pushing.

"Goodness is rewarded. Hope is guaranteed. Laughter builds strong bones. Right will intercede. Things you've said I often find I need, indeed. I see the world through your eyes. What's black and white is colorized. The knowledge you most dearly prized I'm eager to employ. You said that life has infinite joys."
i agree with everyone's suggestions on the best belters, but you missed a VERY important one (or at least an important one to me :) )
Diana Kaarina-- Eponine on the Nat'l Tour of Les Miz for probably 3 years, then went to on be the final Eponine on B'way. Saw her 3 times... Absolutely incredible, the best Eponine I've ever seen.
Am I the only person who is not a fan of Diana Kaarina?
"You! You are the worst thing to happen to musical theatre since Andrew Lloyd Webber! And you, well, I just plain don't like you."
