I'm trying to win tickets to Les Mis and I need the answer to a question:
Inspector Javert pursues Jean Valjean for breaking his parole. Originally Valjean was imprisioned for stealing a loaf of bread and another crime. Was the other crime breaking a window, writing a letter to the editor or failing to bow to an aristocrat?

Thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure it's the window...

None of the above. He violated his ASBO and wore Burberry in public. re: Question for Les Mis fans

Or if you're in a less silly mood, the lyrics of the Prologue clearly lay it out. If you have a cast recording, give it a listen. If you haven't, give it a Google. Put in a *little* work for this competition you are trying to win for yourself, y'know? re: Question for Les Mis fans

Weez IS right - it IS right there in the prologue so you couldn't have looked too hard...

But you're welcome for the help -- hope you win!

He Stole a loaf of bread, that's the first thing. Then he tried to run away multiple times, so they made him do more time, and then after they let him out he broke his... oh, they already told you he broke his parole... I think he did break a window in the book, but there's definitely nothing about letters to the editior or bowing to an aristocrat. What are you doing to win tickets?

He does break a window to get the bread, and I don't know if they mentioni the window in the show.

They definitely mention the window in the show. That is definitely the answer.

Javert: You robbed a house!
Valjean: I broke a window pane.

What is this?

I only know a few songs-One Day More, Do You Hear The People Sing, and some others. There's a reason I'm trying to *win* tickets, I don't have much money because I'm trying to save for college.
Sorry for not knowing the show as well as everyone...

No need to apologize for not having it memorized re: Question for Les Mis fans You'll get there. It's OK and doesn't make you any less of a fan or less deserving of winning those tickets! re: Question for Les Mis fans

It's not breking the window!!!! That's part of the first crime.

[JAVERT]
No!
It means you get
Your yellow ticket-of-leave
You are a thief

[VALJEAN]
I stole a loaf of bread.

[JAVERT]
You robbed a house.

[VALJEAN]
I broke a window pane.
My sister's child was close to death
And we were starving.

The second part comes a bit later.

[VALJEAN]
I know the meaning of those 19 years
A slave of the law

[JAVERT]
Five years for what you did
The rest because you tried to run
Yes, 24601.

[VALJEAN]
My name is Jean Valjean

So two crimes: Stealing a loaf of bread and trying to escape.

Read carefully the question she asked. They just want the two reasons for the *initial* incarceration- stealing the bread and breaking the window re: Question for Les Mis fans

Footlooser- You're right IF they wanted why he remained in for so long... That would be IF the way they are looking at it as two different crimes.

I think it's funny that "writing a letter to the editor" is even a choice.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
