1. Police Officer on 43rd and Bway totally geared up with Ak-47.
Nice guy, had an interesting chat, and then 3 drunk teenage boys enter his "zone". Great stare down Yeah, it's a REAL assault rifle. They fled.
2. Across the st from McDonalds - Times Sq. FDNY guy standing next to a yellow tent, and a firetruck. Yes, the "tent" was a hazmat decontamination area, should there be a chemical attack. Yikes.

Sounds exciting!
Not really, Blaxx. Even though the police, FBI, etc. do a fabulous job securing the area - logistically almost impossible, and VERY impressive), it is a f**cking nightmare, and a dangerous feeling. I just had a morbid curiousity this year. NEVER again. Just mobs. I wouldn't reccommend going there to anyone. But, of course, I'm a cynical, jaded NYer. Most of the crowd was under 25, and with good reason .
I can relate. I decided to ring in the year 2000 on Times Square. Never again.

Because they can withstand chemical assault fairly easily?
NOOO cos they have already VOLUNTARILY chemically assaulted their senses so they aint no more room in they systems for anything else to hoit em. Ah yooth!
Last year in March ther was an increased "presence" one night when I was there. I Talked to on of the Special Forces guys if there had been any information about the area but he just commented that it was a "routine Visible presence". yeah flak jackets, ak47's and stun grenades (on a belt) are "routine".
one more weird sighting tonite. a very young hasidic couple, he with flaming red payes, she, with double stroller and 2 tiny babies about 3 months old. oy. my orthodox girlfriend would have given them hell. lol. who the **** brings babies to this craziness. oh, btw, there were plenty of other babies too. i will try and post pix in a few days...

Sabrelady, I love when you talk in the vernacular. It's very important for Americans to get comfortable and feel it's routine when we gaze upon our completely militarized police force. AK-47s, tanks, you name it. It's everyday, ordinary.
I've lived here all my life and I've never gone to times square for new years eve. Today was the first time I've even gone to a show on new years eve. Soon as the show was over I got the hell out of there. I had a backpack and I walked down broadway a bit and was never checked whatsoever. That's the problem, no matter how much they check they can never check everyone.
I don't know how/where they got this stats but Dick Clark tonight actually mentioned that every 8 out of 10 people in times square is from out of town. Sounds about right though cause it always seem like native new yorkers avoid times square on new years eve like it's the plague.

minor point, FWIW: US police forces don't use AK-47s. Automatic weapons, yes, but not AKs.
Babies have no idea what time it is. They sleep/eat/poop whenever they need to.
double post

I can't think of a worse place to bring a baby. I'm always astounded at the dangerous situations some mothers place their babies. I love it when they stand IN the street, waiting to cross, with the strollers in front of them.

Yeah, I don't think I'd be bringing my 8 year old there on New Year's Eve, let alone a baby.
