Joe, I don't agree. I was extremely impressed by his role in Dark Knight. While I was watching, I was thinking oscar!
It's all how you want to look at it.
The ONLY reason she was even considered for in Supporting Category for "The Reader" is because there was NO WAY you could put her in for "Revolutionary Road" and both were favorites for nominations. It's studio Business.
Had "Revolutionary Road" not existed then she would have always been in the Leading Category for "The Reader".
It's that simple.
Huh?
anyway, I'm rooting for Kate this year~
"It's that simple."
Actually, I don't think it is. there are different rules each year and for each individual case. who can keep up with it?
Maybe it's not that simple...but the main point should be that if she wins Best Actress for "The Reader" it will be in the right category and for the right role.
"I sorely wanted to see Wall-E take a Best Picture nod, but the Academy's animated picture ghetto will forever prevent anything was audacious as that. "
Disney's Beauty and the Beast was nominated for Best Picture.
...that was before the Best Animated Feature category existed.
I think Winslet's chances at winning are a bit lower now that the Academy didn't buy her Supporting/Lead double nod campaign. I still think she'll win, but I don't think it'll be a shock if she doesn't. It seems to be between her and Meryl, and I do wonder if at the end of the day, Anne Hathaway will win over the two. I guess we'll know better on Sunday when the SAG winners are announced.
Mickey Rourke has a lot of buzz going on for him so he might take it, but I'm rooting for Sean Penn. Oh, and I yelled a big "yes!" when they announced Richard Jenkins' name. He was brilliant to no end in THE VISITOR, a performance worthy of the award actually. I loved him. Glad that the Academy nominated him over Clint Eastwood's annoying performance in GRAN TORINO. I think everyone in the Lead Actor category is quite deserving.
I was hoping Sally Hawkins would get the nod over Jolie though I haven't seen CHANGELING.
I was shocked at the Michael Shannon nod, pretty impressive. I did want Dev Patel to get a nomination but oh well.
Overall, really looking forward to the awards. So glad they didn't put DARK KNIGHT in the Best Pic category.

Hooray for Richard Jenkins. He is a long time stage actor and former Artistic Director of Trinity Rep in Providence RI
I'm sorry but REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, and everyone involved, got screwed. DeCaprio should have been nominated along with the film. I would have rather seen REVOLUTIONARY ROAD nominated for best picture over BUTTON, READER or FROST/NIXON. Major disappointment. But glad that MILK was recognized with 8 nominations after being egregiously overlooked by the silly Golden Globules.
I sorely wanted to see Wall-E take a Best Picture nod, but the Academy's animated picture ghetto will forever prevent anything was audacious as that.
Does that mean the Documentary and Foreign Language categories are ghettos as well?
I just... Rarely have I seen such a mediocre performance get SO much Oscar buzz, especially in a year when terrific young performances were in high supply.
Which mediocre performance do you mean?
I am glad that Kate Winslet was nominated for The Reader, I thought that performance was far superior to her role in Revolutionary Road (though she was really good in that too). I am glad The Reader got nominated for Best Picture, it was one of my favorite movies of last year.
I am glad to see Richard Jenkins sneak in there with a nod. I was hoping that Dev Patel was going to be nominated. But at least SAG nominated him.
Also, I am glad to see that the Best Directors coincide with all the Best Pictures.
Very sad to see Sally Hawkins off the list. She was great in Happy-Go-Lucky. I guess I will have to try to see Changling to see if Jolie is any good in it.
Thanks, Cap'n.
As usual, not a lot of women outside the actress and docu categories.
Mixed bag for me this year with the nominations... I'm thrilled for Michael Shannon, Kate Winslet, and The Reader - and I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who found the movie to be captivating, bschneid. It was also one of my favorites of this year.
Angry about the DiCaprio snub - for me, him and Winslet made Revolutionary Road worth seeing. Though I have to say, I'm happy she was nominated for Reader over RR. I do see the argument for supporting vs. leading, however. I just hope that doesn't overshadow her. I'd love for this to finally be her year.
I still haven't seen 2 out of 5 of the Best Picture noms, but would honestly love to see Milk or The Reader take it. I liked Slumdog very much, but I don't think it was the best this year. Would also like to see Sean Penn win, as much as I like Mickey Rourke's performance. But I have my bias. :)

I'm going back to the Titanic for a moment. I never bought Winslet and DiCaprio as a couple. To me, she looked like his mother.
Now, I still can't buy it. DiCaprio still looks like a child to me. I can't even believe he's an adult, even when he's acting. And I think Winslet looks a little matronly, which I don't mean as an insult. She's gorgeous! But she looks a little mature, especially next to DiCaprio. This feeling about the two of them was distracting to me all through Rev Road. So that's why I'd like to see her get the oscar for the Reader.
I completely disagree with your assertions that Ledger would not have even gotten a nomination were he still alive. As an actor, I can recognize and acknowledge a fine performance when I see one. I called the Downey, Jr. nomination as the credits rolled after 'Tropic Thunder' way back in the dead of summer, long before he had any "Oscar buzz". Ledger achieved what a great supporting performance should do, use his screentime to completely capture the audience. When he was on screen, I was riveted, and frankly, when he wasn't, I think the movie suffered. He was electric.
It was the final performance of a young, oft-underestimated actor, yes, but in my opinion, it just happened to be a phenomenal one. Of course there will be added voter sympathy, but if he wins on Oscar night, at least in my eyes, no injustice will have taken place.

I'm pissed Synecdoche New York got nothing! Argh!
While Synecdoche, New York was a very interesting film, I am sure it left most of its audience (including myself) baffled. Though, I thought the Cinematography was really good. But, I wouldn't be able to single out one actor in the film, as it is an ensemble film(just like in an Altman film).
I think they should give Ledger a special award instead of nominating him for best supporting actor. I wouldn't say this for all dead actors by any means, but his performance in The Dark Knight WAS award worthy. The thing is, if he wins, no one will really know if he won because he died or because the performance was the voters' favorite. Additionally, his death skews the race, potentially taking the award away from someone else who would have won otherwise.
"The thing is, if he wins, no one will really know if he won because he died or because the performance was the voters' favorite."
You could say that about a plethora of award winners-did they win because they died? Did they win because of ill health? Did they win because of their past resume and not their current role? Did they win because they were robbed last year? and on and on.
That is true too. Not to mention the slew of actor/actresses who were nominated many times and never won and award, or even a lifetime achievement.
It would be interesting to know the thought process that goes behind the voting and nominating of the Oscars. Awards should be given on Merit and not sympathy.
As usual, not a lot of women outside the actress and docu categories.
Which women did you feel were deserving of nominations that were left out?
Who says that they aren't giving him the award out of merit. It was a great performance. Who would you have them give it to instead? Downey? Hoffman. His performance is far more deserving than both of theirs. I could see giving it to Brolin, but what makes his performance superior? It's not entirely a sympathy vote. For my money, dead or alive, Ledger's was the supporting performance of the year.

I hope Mickey Rourke wins for giving one of the most astonishing film performances of all time.
