The Living Wage needs to be higher.
This "this will kill business" argument is tired and incorrect. It has long been established that the federal minimum wage has been helpful.
Besides: Wal-Mart raises their salaries and guess where the majority of that money will go- right back to Wal-Mart.

The intial comment makes no sense anyway.
Starbucks wouldn't be affected.
If you're going to try and make an argument, Goth, I would say the local pizzeria and diner is more likely to suffer than Starbucks.

Obviously you don't know that much about business.

Tag, the federal minimum wage is currently $5.85 and is set to go up again in July to $6.55. In July of 2009 it will rise once again to $7.25.

However, many states have their own minimum wage that is higher than the federal. And apparently there are a couple of states that use a minimum wage that is lower.

Starbucks provides health benefits to part-time employees and 401K to full time employees.
Starbucks is one of the most fair, generous corporations to its employees in the nation.

So at the new, outrageously high minimum wage, the employee would be making $19,760 a year. Without looking at any health care or IRA deductions, that means the employee would have a take home pay of about $280 a week. The USDA says that on a "Thrifty plan" an adult can live on $46 a week for food. (the "Liberal plan is about $65 a person, but both plans call for strategic shopping, no eating out and access to a supermarket and kitchen.) I couldn't find a national average on Rent- but arrived at a fairly arbitrary $750 a month after looking at a handful of urban areas. Plus some people have roommates, share bedrooms, etc. Should we say $100 a week rent? Transportation varies wildly- it's more expensive if you have to own a car, for example, but our theoretical employee can't afford a car. The average cost of a Mass Transit ride is now just under $2. If you ride every day that's $28 a week in transportation- which seems REALLY low. Clothing? Again, you can really skimp, buying in thrift stores and the like, but you also have to include the cost of washing your clothes so can we say $60 a month? I guess you can live without a phone (and I'll be generous and assume that all your other utilities are included in your rent) but if you DO need a phone it's 30-50 a month.
OK where are we: $50 a week food, $100 a week rent, $28 a week transit, $15 a week clothes, $12 a week phone....we're already up over $200 a week. Get the point? Minimum wage is REALLY minimal- even if we raise it to $9.50 an hour....
