Posted: 4/14/11 at 6:28pmIt's sad, but not surprising. Soap operas have had one foot in the grave for years. There just isn't much of an audience for them anymore.

Snafu, I'm a stay at home mom!
I'm more bummed about OLTL than I am AMC though.

The proposed new shows seem so dull and unoriginal.
The soap opera audience has been dwindling, but one could argue that they remain loyal, engaged fans. DVR playback has added ratings, but the economic model has changed, and the networks no longer feel these are the best and most profitable programs. There are so few left.
So many jobs will be lost.
The end of an era...

I haven't watched OLTL in years but I used to really like it. The Cord and (Andrea Evans) Tina years were great. I was crazy about Max and Gabrielle! Some real talent on that show. I loved Erika Slezak, Robin Strasser, Philip Carey and Hillary Smith.
There was nothing like the ABC soaps.

This is Susan Lucci's first publicity photo as "Erica Kane". It was taken in 1970 shorty after the show premiered. The end of an era indeed.

All My Children's original "Romeo & Juliet", Phil Brent (Richard Hatch) and Tara Martin (Karen Gorney). Their romance formed part of the triangle which included Erica Kane (Susan Lucci). It was very reminiscent of the Rodney/Allison/Betty dynamic that was a big part of "Peyton Place".
Mind you, I was only 2 when this show hit the air waves, but I was drawn to it in the '80s and my mom was a huge fan and filled me in on all the earlier story lines.
This must be very devastating for Susan Lucci. It was her second home and her extended family for over 40 years!

Posted: 4/15/11 at 2:41amI was shocked when I read the news. I never thought I would be alive to see both shows cancelled. That's like cancelling Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune. Shoot, even The Simpsons as well!

Now you know how I felt when they canceled As The World Turns and The Guiding Light. Sadly, a lot of those actors got jobs on AMC and OLTL and will now be unemployed, again. Genoa City is going to have a population explosion.

Wait...As the World Turns was cancelled? Where have I been? So, the only soaps are Young & Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of Our Lives, and General Hospital?
The only soap me and my family watched religiously was Passions. Haha.

Like many of you posting, I was drawn into AMC when I was in college, and I got hooked. I even scheduled classes around it. This was the early '80s, when Dorothy Lyman was Opal, and the big Greg & Jenny/Angie & Jessie storylines were going on. I remember how shocked I was when they killed off Jenny, too. I was sad for days.
After college, I stopped watching. I caught an episode here and there, and for a while I could still follow it a bit. Then years, decades went by, and I tried to watch again. I didn't recognize anybody or know any of the characters. Still, once in a while, I would catch Suan Lucci or David Canary and feel that nostalgic twinge of younger days.
I will say that I got to meet a few of the actors through mutual friends after I left college and moved to NYC. I was truly starstruck at the time. I also got to be friends with the late and wonderful Ruth Warrick. I met her in NY as well, and our friendship continued when I moved to the west coast. I adored her. Funny, intelligent, very passionate about all sorts of things, and she swore like a truck driver. Her upper-crust "Phoebe" voice was an act, too. I always sort of did a double-take when I would hear her slip in and out of it. Ruth could turn on and off that "Beverly Hills" delivery like a light switch.
I agree, it's the end of an era.
I'm sure the very last shot will be a closeup on Erica's face as she closes a door. And there won't be a dry eye in the house.

Don't be a hater, Betty. I can't spend ALL my time on Broadwayworld.

I got hooked on AMC, OLTL and GH in high school.
I loved all three, but AMC was tough to catch every day. I'd watch while on the phone with my friends.
Some great acting, and I agree about Lyman, she was amazing. It was so sad because she was terrible on "Mama's Family".
There's no way her Opal would ever call someone her "galpal".
It was Jenny and Jesse's relationship that was the most special.
Anyway, Thanks for the laugh Betty...that's a great line and I also LOVE the Quacker Factory!

Posted: 4/15/11 at 2:18pmBesty, I pretty much followed the same path with AMC. Watched OLTL for a bit and, of course, General Hospital during the Luke & Laura days. I haven't watched them in years...until now! I am staying with a friend and have been looking in on AMC lately. (Along with one or two others) They can be addictive!

Posted: 4/17/11 at 1:21amI started watching AMC when I was in HighSchool and on and off for the past 40 plus years. OLTL I could take it or leave and often chose to leave it but since the departure of David Canary, Ruth Warwick, James Mitchell ( well they are deceased ) and Thorsten Kaye I started to watch OLTL. I had enough already with Cooking shows ( I have freakin Cable) and whatever else ABC is planning to put on. I understand why some of you guys' Moms are upset because I am one of those upset Mothers and the Mother is PO'D even if they were beneath some peoples sense of good TV viewing it was a nice break ,
