Academy Award disgrace!!!

The tony award disgrace thread made me want to make one for the Academy Awards. One that I can think of right now is Bill Murray losing to Sean Penn last year. Sean Penn hadn't even attended a cermony until that point(and he had been nominated 3 times before!!!). Anyways, I'd give it to Bill Murray in a heartbeat.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

His attendance shouldn't have anything to do with his Oscar win, which is based on his acting.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Sean Penn deserved that award whether he showed up or not !!!!

Julianne Moore (Far From Heaven) losing to Nicole Kidman (The Hours) was a disgrace.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

It shows that he doesn't give a flip about it, which I think means something....at least it should

Not at all. Oscar= awarded for acting ability in a role. And I'm glad they maintained that in the case of Mr. Penn.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I was very pissed when "The Sixth Sense" lost everything to "American Beauty." Toni Collette definitely should have won Best Supporting Actress, at the very least.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I cannot watch "Far From Heaven" without crying. Her performance is up there with Gloria Swanson ("Sunset Blvd."), Diane Keaton ("Annie Hall"), and Kate Hepburn ("Long Day's Journey Into Night") as one of the best EVER!

And Dennis Quaid, Patty Clarkson, and Dennis Haysbert weren't even nominated!

More Robberies:

Renee Zellweger ("Cold Mountain") beating Shoreh Aghdashloo ("House of Sand and Fog").
Bill Murray being snubbed for "Rushmore".
The fact that Martin Scorsese has never won and Oscar, but Kevin Costner has!

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Laura Linney most definitely should've won for 'You Can Count On Me'. A crying shame...

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Ellen Burstyn in "Requiem for a Dream" was twenty times better than Julia Roberts.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

That is true, but I didn't post the Laura Linney thread. I love Laura, but you have to give credit where credit is due. Ellen's work is chillingly powerful.

How id Ed Harris' riveting portrayal of Jackson Pollock lose to Russell Crowe's mediocre at least performance in "Gladiator"?

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Yeah if Ed Harris would have won...that would have set Crowe up to win for A Beautiful Mind....

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

...but hey, Laura was! Not that she'll win for this either. re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I second Ian MacKellan's robbery, even though Jim Broadbent was very good.
American Beauty deserved to win everything it won. With the exception of Annette Benning, who SHOULD have one. Hilary Swank is amazing, but Benning's performance was transcendant.
Sean Penn is an incredible actor. But, Mystic River was ****e. Hated it. It wasn't even Sean Penn's best performance. Not even close. That thrashing about with the police, screaming to the heavens?!? Give me a frickin break.
Bill Murray should've won hands down.
And yes, Julianne Moore losing to Nicole Kidman was a joke.
Word. Word, indeed.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I thought Nicole Kidman in THE HOURS was absolutely brilliantly amazing, and definitely should have won, I can't believe people don't think so.

Not a disgrace, but I would have liked to see THE HOURS win best picture over CHICAGO.

Are you serious about THE SIXTH SENSE deserving more than AMERICAN BEAUTY? AMERICAN BEAUTY is one of the absolute greatest movies ever made, and deserved even more than it won.

And Sean Penn for MYSTIC RIVER? Absolutey!!!! He was brilliant in it, and it was a GREAT movie. I hated LOST IN TRANSLATION, and thought Bill Murray was the same in that movie as is is in everything else he ever does. He's even all those characters on talk shows - he never changes.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

B.B. Wolf thanks for agreeing with me about Bill Murray....as for Nicole Kidman being that she was billed third(behind Julianne Moore) wouldn't you think that she would have been a better as Best Supporting Actress...an actress by any other name would have....BTW The best actress in The Hours was Meryl Streep IMO.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Ian McKellan not winning for Lord of the Rings.
Cate Blanchett not winning for Elizabeth.
Chicago winning best picture I mean it was a good movie but not the best picture of the year.
Martin Scorsese not winning a Oscar yet.
Apollo 13 not winning best picture.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

With Regards to Ian McKellan I would have given him the oscar for Best Actor for Gods and Monsters

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I'm with Monku on Nicole and The Hours.

And, Melissa, I think Shoreh Aghdashloo as great an actress as Renee, so I couldn't say either one more deserving than the other :)
