Not that it's any consideration, but Dame Maggie already has two, while Dame Helen has none - plus I felt Dame Helen gave an astonishing performance and really deserved the award.

I did like the movie "Whale Rider", but you cannot tell me that Keisha Castle-Hughes' performance was anywhere near Evan Rachel Wood's. It's not even in the same league.
mef, was there not a best picture category in last nights awards? Just best cast? I guess that makes sense - they only award acting and nothing else. I'm so thrilled that SIDEWAYS won best cast, they definitely deserve it. I was very very very disappointed with the wins of Foxx, Freeman, and Blanchett. I wouldn't say they didn't deserve it, but I found others superior...

OMG, "Capturing The Friedmans" losing was THE biggest shock to me. I swear, it is the best documentary I have seen in my life- that movie just GOT TO ME. It was disturbing yet brilliant.

Annette should have won over Hilary Swank. Hilary had the look down, and was great, but Annette enveloped that character, a real tour de force performance. I hope she wins this year, she needs an Oscar
I really see Swank taking the Oscar this year. If there is a surprise, it will be Imelda Staunton for "Vera Drake." I don't call it a surprise because she's not as strong as Swank, but it's a little known Mike Leigh film (much like Brenda Blethyn faced in 95 with "Secrets and Lies" when she went up against Frances McDormand in "Fargo"). Swank's role is what Oscar loves to award. Swank got buffed up for the role, and delivered a gut-wrenching, gritty performance. Also, (SPOLIER ALERT), she is near death for part of the film and then dies. I don't see how they wouldn't give her the Oscar this year. Plus this year, she'll get the chance to thank her husband, Chad Lowe, whom she forgot to thank during her Oscar acceptance speech when she won for "Boys Don't Cry."
It was deemed ineligible because it aired on Showtime prior to its theatrical release, but if it hadn't, I would have liked to have seen Ryan Gosling's haunting, chilling portrayal of a Jewish born and yeshiva educated Neo-Nazi in "The Believer" recognized.
Kate Winslet is only nominated in one category--Best Actress for "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". She wasn't nominated as a Supporting Actress.
