re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I love Glenda Jackson, but Babs was way better. Plus Glenda, now an MP, had already won a very much deserved Oscar for "Women in Love".

Amen, sister!

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Also, why did "Rain Man", which is mediocre at best, win so many Oscars?

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Hmmmm.... Not so sure about "Rain Man".

But I did some checking and I take back wanting Deborah Kerr to win for "From Here To Eternity" - since Audrey Hepburn won that year for "Roman Holiday", and she was indeed deserving. BUT Deborah Kerr should have won for her incredible performance in "Separate Tables", over Susan Hayward for that sappy, over the top performance in "I Want To Live"!

And another thing.. I love Jane Fonda, and she was great in "Coming Home", but I still think that judging by the perfomance alone, Ingrid Bergman should have won for "Autumn Sonata" that year, or at least Jill Clayburgh for "An Unmarried Woman".

"I guess you are only allowed to win two years in a row if your name is Tom Hanks."

. . . or Spencer Tracy.

....Or Walter Brennen (Hey- Supporting counts!)

. . . or Louise Rainer (women count, too! re: Academy Award disgrace!!!)

And hello, Liam - won't be doing PMs for awhile.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Hmm...I thought MYSTIC RIVER was one of the most powerful films ever made. It was amazing and Sean Penn, Marcia Gay Harden, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon all gave tour de force performances. It was an all around near-flawless movie. I personally thought it should have won over LOTR for Best Picture or AT LEAST beat it for Best Adapted Screenplay.

If you have not seen Mystic River yet, go rent it. Its truly unforgettable

And dont forget Adrian Brody beating Daniel Day-Lewis' peformance of his career.

Also: Not Oscars but at the Golden Globes, I thought Gangs of New York should have beat The Hours for Best Drama.

I'm still angry that Sean Astin didn't get NOMINATED for Return of the King. That's all I wanted, dammit! >_<

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Taryn - I thought Astin deserved a nomination as well, instead of Alec Baldwin for The Cooler.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Russell Crowe not even being nominated for 'LA Confidential' and then Jack Nicholson winning for 'As Good As It Gets.' (Love the movie, though.)

'Forrest Gump' beating 'Quiz Show' and 'The Shawshank Redemption.'

'Rebel Without A Cause' not being nominated in the awful Oscar season of 1955.

'Return of the King' winning Best Picture and most every award 'LOTR' won along the way, although McKellan was a good Gandalf.

Judy Garland losing for A STAR IS BORN

Dustin Hoffman for Kramer vs Kramer instead of
Roy Schieder for All That Jazz

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Oh, JohnPopa, you reminded me:

Helen Hunt winning for "As Good As It Gets" over Julie Christie's PHENOMENAL performance in "Afterglow".

And Dustin Hoffman deserved to win that year, IMHO.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

BTW, BwayLover is that Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren in your icon???? If so, how ironic that you guys were just talking about the two of them getting nominated for Gotsford Park....infact that pic could be from the ceremony.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I agree that Evan Rachel Wood should've gotten a nomination for Thirteen. She gave an extremly disturbing performance. I was 18 when I saw it and was shocked. However I don't know how accurate of a portrayal the story gave of a 13 year old girl. In some instances yes, but when the other girl (the won who co-wrote it) went on Oprah telling parents that the movie prettty much how it is and yours kids are lying to you, I think it went a little to far. I could just be very naive.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Here is one.....while I loved Helen Hayes(1970) in the movie Airplane and am glad she won, but Karen Black's role in Five Easy Pieces in the stuff that Best Supporting Actress Oscars are made of.

Lee Grant Best Supporting Actress for Shampoo in 1975???? No way.....I would have given it to Ronee Blakley for Nashville

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Well, while Wood wasn't nominated for 13.....another girl was Keisha Castle-Hughes....it was deserved and for sure wasn't a cutesy role.......btw with regards to 13, I hated the acting of the best friend, her helping write it was the only way she got that part.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Yeah, MTVMANN, that's a picture from the ceremony itself... Ironically enough, I had it as my avatar before this thread started. Yes, I like both actresses a lot! re: Academy Award disgrace!!!
