re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I go for drama over comedy anyday, so I would love liked to see Shoreh win as well. She was heartbreaking.

ALL THIS THREAD SO FAR AND THE FURTHEST BACK YOU CAN SEE IS A COUPLE OF YEARS?!?

You people need to grow up and learn something before you open your mouths. It used to be that children were seen but not heard. Those were the days.

Grace Kelly over Judy Garland, anyone? Or do those names even ring a bell?

"Are you serious about THE SIXTH SENSE deserving more than AMERICAN BEAUTY? AMERICAN BEAUTY is one of the absolute greatest movies ever made, and deserved even more than it won."

Yes, I am. I did not like "American Beauty" and I loved "The Sixth Sense."

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

trust me, I'm incredibly pissed that Judy only won a juvenile Oscar in her entire career!

JID - you are, and always have been, an extreme exception to the rule on this site.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Good. I was about to go crazy when no one mentioned Judy. Yes, complete disgrace.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Okay I have a few (besides some mentioned above I agree with, such as Russell Crowe winning -ugh!):

*Jennifer Connely beating both Helen Mirren AND Maggie Smith....Simply unbelieveable.
<------------

*Maureen O'Hara not even being nominated for THE QUIET MAN or ONLY THE LONELY.

*Deborah Kerr losing every single one of her 6 nominations (She should have won for THE SUNDOWNERS instead of Elizabeth Taylor, who only won cause they thought she was dying)

Evelyn - frankly, the only thing I remember from Gosford is Maggie Smith's character saying, "Yummy, yummy, yummy" - which we quote frequently.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

I don't remember any lines from Gosford Park. I just remember that the day I saw it, some guy made me hysterical when I overheard him saying, "I wish that I could run over all gays at a Monster Truck rally."

Whereas films like Chicago and Titanic had the beautiful effect of making me forget every ugly thing I'd experienced earlier in the day or week for their running times, Gosford Park was neither a complete diversion nor was it momentarily entertaining. After seeing it, I was glad that Robert Altman's plans to direct Ragtime never came to fruition.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Are you serious? "Gosford Park" is a MASTERPIECE. I was shocked when Robert Altman lost the best director award to Ron Howard, and that such a mediocare movie such as "A Beautiful Mind" beat such genius filmmaking as "Gosford Park". SHOKCED.

And Helen Mirren should have gotten that award for her final scene alone. It was heartbreaking.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

This about sums up my opinion:

"I could go hoarse singing the praises of this cast, of MacDonald's plaintive befuddlement and Watson's heartbreaking (but so sexy) mixture of jadedness and hope. I wanted even more of the lovely Camilla Rutherford as Sir William's discombobulated daughter; of Claudie Blakley as the plain, mistreated wife of a debt-ridden hanger-on (James Wilby); of Atkins' sour and cryptic head cook, whose anti-pathetic relationship with Mirren's Mrs. Wilson is the key downstairs subtext. Mirren has won—and will win—all kinds of awards for this role, for the very good reason that her wrenching final scene makes sense of every disapproving glance and tight inflection that has preceded it. No superlatives of mine can do her justice: You must see this performance."

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

see now that is a disgrace, Ian McKellen not winning an oscar for LOTR. He really deserved to win that one. I was even more pissed off when Sean Astin was robbed of his supporting actor nomination. I mean, in that scene when Samwise stabbed that huge spider (shudders) and while he stayed by Frodo's side, those are the reasons that Sean should have been nominated for best supporting actor.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Bway - I do remember thinking it was somewhat ludicrous that all this attention was paid to Dame Smith, while Helen's work went unheralded. I still maintain, though, that the film itself was a meandering, mindless piece of laziness.

But I'm really happy that you enjoyed it - somebody should have.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

There was a film about the MAKING of Gosford Park that I really enjoyed...

The concept is interesting. The execution disappointed me.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Okay- everyone's entitled to an opinion. :)

It's just weird, because I really enjoyed this movie (In fact, I watched it again the other night- I own the DVD), and I thought it should have gotten more accolades than it did.

And don't get me wrong, I adore Dame Maggie...But out of the two, I wanted Dame Helen to win. re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

And, DG, no comments about Maureen O'Hara or Deborah Kerr? Do you agree?

No hard feelings, Evelyn. It's just the way I express myself...re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Bway - yes, I think O'Hara should have at least been nominated for The Quiet Man.

However, if anyone was going to override the sentiment of Taylor's win for Butterfield 8, I think it should have been MacLaine for The Apartment.

And by the way, I DO think Maureen O'Hara was one of the most GORGEOUS women to have ever been captured on film.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

That piece of crap GLADIATOR winning best picture.

And along with it: Russell Crowe winning Best Actor for that piece of crap GLADIATOR when he really deserved it the year before for THE INSIDER.

Russell Crowe NOT winning for A BEAUTIFUL MIND because he won it the year before for that piece of crap GLADIATOR.

I guess you are only allowed to win two years in a row if your name is Tom Hanks.

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

Speaking of Holly Hunter's brilliant performance in "Thirteen", why wasn't Evan Rachel Wood nominated? What, does the academy only honor younger actors when they play cutesy roles?

re: Academy Award disgrace!!!

DG, I couldn't agree more (about O'Hara). Remind me to tell you sometime how I got to speak to her on the phone AND got two personally autographed photos from her. As well as being gorgeous, she's also an absolute sweetheart!

And yeah, you got a point about Kerr/Taylor/MacLaine.... But I think it's just a shame Deborah Kerr didn't win at least one award. Can you believe she lost for "From Here To Eternity"???

Also, Glenda Jackson winning over Barbra Streisand in "The Way We Were". What WAS that?
