LONDON - British actress Deborah Kerr, who shared one of cinema's most famous kisses with Burt Lancaster in "From Here to Eternity," has died, her agent said Thursday. She was 86
Kerr, who suffered from Parkinson's disease, died Tuesday in Suffolk, eastern England, agent Anne Hutton said.
Born in Scotland in 1921, Kerr began her career in regional British theaters and entertained the troops during World War II. Her first major screen role was in "Major Barbara" in 1941.
For many she will be remembered best for her clinch in the surf with Lancaster in the wartime drama "From Here to Eternity" — regularly voted among the greatest screen kisses.
Other memorable roles included Anna Leonowens, the British governess who falls for the king of Siam in "The King and I."
Kerr is survived by her husband, Peter Viertel, two daughters and three grandchildren.
I adored her.
RIP, Deborah.
And, thank you for the beauty you shared with us.
Me too. Such an elegant woman.
"An Affair to Remember" is one of my all-time favorite movies...

Mine, too. She was a wonderful actress.
Sad. She was so brilliant in From Here To Eternity. Loved her.
Beautiful.
This saddens me.
I loved "An Affair to Remember," too...
I have to admit, I didn't realize she was still alive. But it sounds like she hadn't been in the best of health in recent years. RIP to a magnificent actress.

Her performance in Affair was just so real.
"Winter must be cold for those with no warm memories. We've already missed the spring."
Oh, Mamie, that picture is beautiful!
Phyllis, I can hear her say that line... I think I have to watch her movies this weekend. Starting with "Affair" tonight.
I'm sure TCM will be doing a retrospective.
She was luminous on the stage. Saw her in SEASCAPE, and also, even more memorably, in THE DAY AFTER THE FAIR. Anyone else here remember her in that? Based on a Hardy short story, a sort of female CYRANO, wherein she wrote letters to a young man for her uneducated maid, with the man learning of the deception on the wedding day. Kerr made it wonderful and deeply touching.
I never had the pleasure of seeing her on stage but I do know that one of my favorite films of hers was Night of the Iguana. I can't explain it exactly but you had all of these really, over the top characters in that film, absolutely eating up the screen, and then there was this strange, lovely, calm island in the midst of it. Watching Richard Burton's character fall in love with her made all the sense in the world.
I would have loved seeing her on stage, but I never had that pleasure.
From Reel Classics:
A very classy Scottish leading lady who arrived in Hollywood in 1947 and was nominated six times for Best Actress Oscars, yet never won, Deborah Kerr is the most-nominated leading actress never to win the Academy Award. She did receive an honorary statuette from the Academy in 1994 however, in recognition of her career achievement as "an artist of impeccable grace and beauty, a dedicated actress whose motion picture career has always stood for perfection, discipline and elegance." Despite her beauty, class and elegance however, this redhead was not above smudging her makeup, or even going without when the part required.

"Tea and Sympathy" is another favorite. Her performance in that was sensitive and moving.

A few months ago I caught the delightful Vacation from Marriage (alternately known as Perfect Strangers) on TMC. Even early in her career (it's from 1945) she had such a presence on screen.
Don't forget her turn in THE SUNDOWNERS and THE INNOCENTS. RIP...although frankly, I thought she died years ago.
She was one of my favorite actresses of all time. I've yet to have seen a bad performance from her.
A great actress and great lady!
Other fine films:
1. THE CHALK GARDEN
2. THE GRASS IS GREENER
3. HEAVEN KNOWS, MR. ALLISON
4. SEPARATE TABLES
NIGHT OF THE IGUANA is a special film with an incredible soul in its center. Her scenes with Richard Burton and Ava Gardner are classes in acting at its peak.

That's really sad. May she rest in peace.
Every once in a while, a thread title makes me gasp.
This one really made me clutch my chest.
What a lovely woman. She brought joy to so many people and made such a name for herself with her elegant, and graceful presence.
