Selected for the National Medal for the Arts in 1997, the highest award given to artists, Rich refused it.
“The radical disparities of wealth and power in America are widening at a devastating rate,” she wrote in a letter addressed to then-President Clinton. “A president cannot meaningfully honor certain token artists while the people at large are so dishonored.”
She walked the walk.
Rest in peace

She was a great poet. It would not be a waste of your time to know her.

What Kind of Times Are These
BY ADRIENNE RICH
There's a place between two stands of trees where the grass grows uphill
and the old revolutionary road breaks off into shadows
near a meeting-house abandoned by the persecuted
who disappeared into those shadows.
I've walked there picking mushrooms at the edge of dread, but don't be fooled
this isn't a Russian poem, this is not somewhere else but here,
our country moving closer to its own truth and dread,
its own ways of making people disappear.
I won't tell you where the place is, the dark mesh of the woods
meeting the unmarked strip of light—
ghost-ridden crossroads, leafmold paradise:
I know already who wants to buy it, sell it, make it disappear.
And I won't tell you where it is, so why do I tell you
anything? Because you still listen, because in times like these
to have you listen at all, it's necessary
to talk about trees.

No, I know who she is. I've just never heard of her. I mean, like, who is she, really?
Anyway, R.I.P.

Posted: 3/29/12 at 8:51amSeriously, AC. Her favorite poems were the ones that weren't considered cannon and she constantly tried to promote work that was ignored by mainstream literary criticism. She was also a lovely woman willing to do readings at smaller public colleges and universities for nowhere near her official asking fee.
