I think there are many intelligent conversations posted on the OT board. I haven't noticed a great amount of threadjacking - if it happens, either ignore the post or block the poster. I enjoy hearing from members older than I am, as well as from the intelligent younger crowd. I see no reason why we can't co-exist.
I actually see both sides of this issue.
I think the problem lies with a few overly obnoxious posters, who jump into threads and have nothing meaningful to say, but instead, are just cries for attention.
I am not sure what a workable answer really is, because as other have stated, even if an Adult Board is created, it will be next to impossible to actually do anything to make sure the conversations remain "Adult."
And, though I am older than many of the posters on this Board, I can be as silly and stupid at times as a teenager.
The only answer in the near term I think is to ignore some of the more obnoxious posts and not give them the attention they so obviously crave. Just act as though the post does not exist. I know it is not easy. I am as guilty as the next person for falling for the bait and responding to some of these board members when they post clearly offensive and obnoxious comments.
penguin - we're arguing semantics then. I think you're looking for the same thing I am.

Perhaps someone should be asking why so many older people are fixated on wanting to talk to children.
From my standpoint, I will say this. I do not discriminate against anyone of any age..... you have something interesting to say and I'll listen. Who knows, I may learn something (and who's to say a kid can't teach an adult something?)
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
I agree with you cj, which is exactly why an adult board is needed....so that those of us who want to communicate seriously here with whoever, teen or adult, can.
Would anyone stay in there all the time? Heck No......I also need the craziness.......
The words we use are very, very important jason. We are both teachers, we know that.
It is this concept of "adult" and the VERY different meanings that word has to people that I find to be the issue.
YWIW, I concur wholeheartedly.
But the point is that there are serious conversations on here that are/can be kept serious.
I also think a lot of how you perceive the board DOES tend to rely on which threads you choose to open. Yes, there are some that stay on topic and are intelligent (there was one about Sweeney Todd a week or two ago that was GREAT) -- I think what I would MOST want would be a filter on meaningless topics. There are so many threads that are just repeats or filters, that it's time consuming enough just sorting through the subjects, let alone posts for interesting things.
I think you'll find, for example, when this thread got jacked earlier, I more or less stayed away until it got back on focus. It's very meta - but this is the exact type of thread that I would want to see on the adult board. How many teens/kids have remained in this discussion? I think most of us left are in the adult category at this point...

I think the kids and teens are just too worried about getting jumped on for expressing their opinion on the topic of this thread.
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
smartpenguin - absolutely. I didn't realize (or did and forgot) that you were a teacher also. :)
And maybe "adult" board isn't the way to go - I don't want to repeat what I've written here about what I would want out of this - let's just say that we're right there on the same page, maybe a slightly different paragraph...
it gets pretty tedious having to watch what ya say because ya never know who's 12. i mean, cjr has to wear a shirt around here because her tatas might scar children and that's just damn unfortunate.
shbrt, you have a point...there are serious discussions here......I do stay away from posts started by certain posters cause I know they'll be.....um....odd.
So maybe that's the key, and as cj said to just ignore those who act up....as we all know when people do that, and don't get the attn they seek, they slink away eventually
I just jumped in, but I'm 20.
In regard to the meaningless topics you mentioned, jasonf, I would think that by now you'd be able to discern which threads are ones you don't have an interest in (I hope that doesn't come off as argumentative; it's not meant to be). I agree that it's annoying to constantly see "Which Broadway actors are nice?" popping up, but I think you can probably tell which threads you don't have an interest in reading. Lately I've been mostly reading the OT board because it's much easier to deal with in terms of fewer superfluous topics.
I'd agree with you, Elphaba. It's pretty easy to pick an interesting topic on this board.

LMAO papa
And as you well know, sometimes it's tough for that shirt to stay on.... the girls are always just itching to jump out

I do agree that the idiots who act up start thousands of ridiculous threads and make it hard to find the good stuff, that is a problem. (many of those at least claim to be adult though, and I can see them being REALLY stupid on an "adult board."
jason, maybe since you were afraid of the jacking you missed my earlier comments. and I'm glad papa is here to remind us what really matters. he is right you know.
Yep, it's not always the "young people" who start silly topics.

And now this discussion begins to veer into something that children shouldn't be looking at. Is it sad that I think a conversation about CJR's "tatas" is inappropriate for children?

I read Kringas' post wrong

I edited it and redited it. Everyone had me so confused.
So joking sexual banter is okay? How do we know when it's a joke and when it's serious?
Well, hell, there are boobs in "Fantasia" and that's a film children often see.
And notice Kringas said the conversation wasn't "inappropriate" for children... double negative

It's serious when one of the joking posters shows up at your door wearing nothing but a trench coat and asks you "is that a gun in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?"

It was intended that way, Shbrt
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
shbrt, I agree with that as well, I have stopped even looking at the main board most of the time.
90% of the threads here are totally useless to 90% of the posters. That is unlikely to change with a new board.
Kringas, we ran off all the children with big words, now we can do whatever we want. I mean the thread title does say, "mature people only." (the fallacy there has been my contention all along)
Yes, I know, CJR.
Me too, penguin!
