This isn't a choice; it's a political stunt. What an old fool! Would she have been his pick had Obama chosen Hilary? I highly doubt it. His best argument against Obama was his inexperience. With McCain celebrating his 72nd birthday today and being the oldest living first-term presidential candidate in history (not to mention his previous bouts with cancer) this makes whatsername literally a heartbeat away from the office of President. How is she any more experienced to be President than Obama? What an asinine choice!

Stockardfan, why are you "thanking" Javero for "understanding" your point? Don't you mean you're thanking him for "agreeing" with you...because that's what he said.

Maybe I don't "understand" your point. Why are you referring repeatedly to your "personal choice" to stay home with your kids in a thread about Sarah Palin if you are not implying something more? Perhaps you are unaware that your statement within the context it appears seems critical of women who do make the "choice" you did.

I also think that you do not "understand" my point, which is that some women do not have the option to stay home. Since you're getting "personal," I will share with you the fact that I have a disabled child AND I am the parent who works outside the home. However, I do so NOT by choice but because my husband is disabled as well and CANNOT work outside the home. Therefore, in order to feed and clothe my children, I must have a job for which I receive a paycheck. Plain and simple.

I am not mentioning this because I feel that I am being judged. I bring it up because I have empathy for women who do not have the option to stay home...even if that is their preference.

It's not always about "ambition" as Javero put it. Or making a lot of money because you want a big house and lots of luxuries. Sometimes it's a matter or survival.

Therefore I do not presume to judge Sarah Palin or Barack Obama's late mother or you. Everyone has their reasons...and sometimes it has nothing to do with "personal choice."

That being said, many children benefit from growing up in non-traditional households. And if you must know, Javero, we resolved the "wet nurse" issue by buying a portable pump and filling up bottles for my husband to use when I was not home. It was NOT fun for me, trust me, but I did it for my children because I wanted to.

Now, does everyone know enough personal info about me for one day? Obama/Biden 08 please

I'm also insulted by remarks that imply that McCain picked her because she's attractive. And I'm not prepared to throw stones at her for the way she has chosen to live her life or manage her family. I'm not ready to call her stupid, either. She's just not prepared to be in the position she finds herself, or rather, has agreed to find herself. That, and many of her basic belief's seem to be distinctly at odds with mine...)

Political women who have paid their dues must be crazed at McCain's move. I have no problem imagining that women far more qualified than she will happily skin and gut her. I'm guessing that Hillary (who I see as the future Attorney General or Secretary of State in an Obama administration) is suddenly re-energized beyond anyone's expectations.

"Her response to the call of duty is admirable but I never like to see the welfare of children compromised in the least owing to the ambition of their parents."

“Javero, you are making a judgment about this woman and her motivations. Tell us, how does it feel to be God?”
.......

Your personal situation notwithstanding, of course I'm making a judgment about her as well as about Obama, Biden and McCain. It's my prerogative to do so as a stakeholder in the upcoming general election, as is yours.

Perhaps I'm guilty of shoddy penmanship for not postfixing the statement with a conditional clause such as "...if that were the case with Palin". Semantics aside, I did preface the statement earlier with a proposition which would lead most astute readers to conclude that I don't claim to have a first-hand account of the motivations of either McCain or Palin. It's reiterated below in order to provide a proper context.

What's not clear to me now (and perhaps never) is whether McCain's choice is based on political expediency alone or Palin's unbridled ambition.

My final point is that this election cycle has generated considerable animus amongst the electorate for reasons related to gender, race, class and age. Though I was an early supporter of Richardson, I say that this is one time in recent memory in which both major parties got it right in terms of their respective tickets. IMO we now have a level playing field where issues can come to the fore again, not fodder for fear-mongers. If only we could get past this two party tyranny.

Happy Labor Day everyone!!!

I just find it very hard to believe republicans would want her in this position.

Well, if they do, then I think it illustrates just how little faith they have in their Presidential candidate, which is probably closer to the truth. I'm terrified shocked Republicans will be singing "The Bum Won" come November due to this little stunt.

"if they attack her for any reason, the McCain camp will shout sexism from the mountaintops and accuse democrats of attacking her on the sole basis that she is a female."

The McCain camp can't do that. Palin was one of Hillary's biggest critics, condemning Hillary for using the sexist card against Obama. Palin declared several times that any kind of whining from a woman who thinks she's being treated unfairly because she's a woman, does a disservice to all women. I'm paraphrasing from memory. But there are clips of it.

There are also quotes of her surfacing that have her admitting that she has been too busy to pay attention to the war and really doesn't know much about the Iraq situation.

I'm seeing lots of reporters quizzing GOP surrogates about this. CNN's Wolfe Blitzer asked one surrogate, "what international affairs experience would qualify her to step in as president?" The surrogate did everything but answer the question. Wolfe asked again that he address the original question. The surrogate stammered and hemmed, mumbling something about her experience simulating foreign affairs experience.

Again, I say...a heartbeat away.

"For months, the McCainiacs have said they will run on his judgment and experience. In his first presidential decision, John McCain has shown that he is willing to endanger his country, potentially leaving it in the hands of someone who simply has no business being a heartbeat away from the most powerful, complicated, difficult job in human history."

I want the first female president to be legitimately elected to office- not someone who gets lucky because the oldest candidate ever dies in office. We deserve better than that.

I'm not criticizing her as so much as I'm criticizing McCain and questioning his decision and judgment in choosing her as his running mate. She's currently under investigation in her own state, for Christ's sake! If these are the kind of decisions we can expect this bonehead to make as President, he's going to make Bush and the last 8 years look like a day at the beach. If I were a woman, I'd be highly insulted and outraged at his pandering. Hell... as a man I'm outraged and offended.

GOP VP candidate asks:

"What is it exactly that the VP does everyday?"

It's at about 2:57 into the piece...the 1st couple of minutes are devoted to the state investigating her.

But What Exactly Would I Do????

Actually, Iflit, I think Patronus was snickering the way 7th grade boys do when the teacher says something in class seemingly innocuous but it has a sexual double-meaning. (Not that there's anything wrong with that! Obama/Biden 08 please)

In this case, it's John McCain "tapping" Sarah Palin.

Get it?

I think I saw that McCain just met her today or he only met her once before today...idk I think I am mostly upset that they are calling her a feminist, she is against abortions for victims of rape and incest...I also hate how they all are saying this is to appeal to the Hilary supporters...Hilary is against everything this women stands for...she was also a huge Buchanan supporter

Everyone please calm down. It has been historically shown that the VP choice never truly impacts the vote. Dan Quayle didn't hurt the first George Bush, and Geraldine Ferraro didn't help Walter Mondale.
