Ha, given all the backstage stories about her jealousy over Beth, I wouldn't be surprised.

Why was she jealous over Beth? Because Beth got the funny part? Lavin was the straight woman in this show, what did she expect (paging Cybil Shepherd, you are the straight woman, the sidekick is the funny one)

Obviously I've only heard gossip, but apparently she didn't like all the attention Howland started to get when the show would get press and felt she had to make it clear to the show's creators that *she* was the star.

And yet it was Polly that got her own (failed) sitcom and not Beth. So Lavin guessed wrong.

I have mixed feelings about this. Its being sold via that ghetto MOD system at Warner Archives. Alice was an award winning popular show that warrants a major release. Meanwhile, crap with one season like GCB and Missing get full rollouts in retail markets. There is no justice.

I never heard she and Howland didn't get along, but I'd heard she didn't get along with Polly Holliday, or Diane Ladd for that matter.

It was Polly Holliday, Lavin had the problem with. The tension was so thick giving Holliday her own show was the best solution. I think you can read about it in DOUBLE LIFE:

Unfortunately the show didn't last long.

ALICE on the whole wasn't a very good show. Fine enough at the time, but really doesn't hold up well.

The best parts were Polly Holliday, the "so-so" depiction of a single working mother, Diane Ladd, and the DEAR WORLD poster in Alice's kitchen.

Alice holds up as well as other comedies I think. Lavin must have been close to Celia Weston who I sat near at The Lyons at The Vineyard and was really nice to me. She clearly loved Linda.

I agree about the frustration of every new TV show getting released, and how hard it is to get some classics (don't get me started about Knotts Landing stalling at two seasons, before it even became full on soap goodness).

(And yes, Beth and Charles are still together).

That theme song irritated the sh!t outta me....

And what the hell was that last line all about....

oh i'll..fum, fum. fum, fum, fum?!!!

lazy, lazy, lazy..can't think up clever lyrics to finish up this lame television theme song...

stagemanager2 posted the later theme which actually had lyrics at the end.

The song stinks with or without a proper ending...

That theme is too fast. Here's the pilot episode, which I'm not saying is great by any means, but it's better than the two examples posted here.

She rerecorded the theme every season, and it went steadily downhill as she "played" with it vocally more and more.

Well, I won't exactly argue. I remember cringing when I heard it originally as a young teenager. It wasn't even "cool" or "breezy" by comparison at the time.

I was just citing a marginally better example of it, rather than the unlistenable renditions she did in later seasons. By the time Diane Ladd and Celia Weston joined the cast, that theme song had reached an all-time low.

She really set the bar!

Does anyone know if Ellen Burstyn was ever approached about doing the sitcom? She had won an Oscar for the movie, she then went and won a Tony for "Same Time Next Year". Didn't anyone ever whisper in her ear "EGOT Ellen, EGOT"
