What is with this open relationship bullcrap? I don't get it. How about good old fashioned monogamy?

You could just as easily say "What is with this monogamy bullcrap? I don't get it. How about good old-fashioned open relationships?"

had it occurred to you that the reason why the "family values" model of a lifetime of monogamy is such a spectacular failure (with such high divorce rates, which will be reflected in the gay community once gay marriage is socially acceptable and commonplace) is precisely because homo sapiens are not designed for a lifetime of monogamy?

the most common arrangement in nature is polyamory. for the vast majority of the history of human existence (we have been homo sapiens for at least 100,000 years, potentially as much as a quarter of a million), one couple has not had to put up with each other for more than 50 years (you died before then).

none of this is to say that monogamy isn't possible, but it seems to me that people should strive for it with the truth in mind.

Yes, but why should they strive for it if it's not what they really want?

I have no rules for the world's relationships. I think as long the relationship works for the partners involved, that's fine.

I personally want a monogamous relationship, and I've been in one for 16 years now. It's not easy, it's not perfect, and it comes with many pros and cons, sacrifices and gifts.

It's a conscious choice, not a natural state of being.

The "confusion" comes from people saying they want "a" (singular) relationship when they really don't.

Monogamy works for us. I wouldn't accept anything less. I also recognize that my personal relationship guidelines aren't for everyone. If I expect people to respect my relationship that may not be what they are used to, I owe others the same respect. Consenting adults and all.

Forgive me, but I haven't read the entire thread and I haven't read most of the articles pertaining to Anderson Cooper's boyfriends' alleged affair but could it be that those two have an arrangement and the photogs just caught wind of it?

I'm not going to assume I know anything about Anderson Cooper or his relationship.

I know it sales papers, but should this be news? Outing cheating partners, whether or not their actually cheating, is no one's business except the people involved.

I rarely agree with Michael Lucas on politics, but here he gets it completely right.

Still, I have the feeling that these circumstances were exactly the kind of thing Cooper wanted to avoid by remaining publicly quiet about his sexuality for so long.

And who can blame him!

And Maisani should have been much more careful for his own sake and for Cooper's, if not for the sake of the community (which I agree with Lucas about).

Let's face it, societal pressure has a lot to do with the "open relations make me feel guilty/icky/like they're not for me". It's part of the shaming of sex in our culture.

There is an interesting article in NY Mag about a gay three-person relationship. I hadn't really ever thought about something like that before.
