It's SO HARD to look at the Kwan vs. Lipinski battle at the 1998 Olympics and not think past the long program.
Meaning that you think of the fact the the Olympics were the last real competition that Tara ever skated in and Michelle went all to SO MUCH MORE and is easily the better skater.
However at the Olympics Tara left it all out there on the ice and Michelle didn't bring enough (she also had a bit of a wobble on a jump too). Tara had to have all of her difficulty that night and her 3 loop-3 loop was AMAZING that night. I think it's fair to say that Tara deserved the gold last night and I would have given it to her too. However, I still love Michelle Kwan more!
And if you want to talk about "Olympic Battles" I also agree EVER MORE that Nancy should have won over Oksana. Talk about being robbed! Nancy TOTALLY surpassed Oksana in the technical aspect...and not just by a bit either.
Dottie---I was so mad when Alyssa Czisny won over Rachel Flatt at Nationals. For some reason I just knew that Alyssa was going to mess it up at WC's.
There are a handful of girls that will be in the running for those two spots.
Besides Alyssa and Rachel, there is Caroline Zhang (who I think has the best chance), Mirai Nagasu (who I don't think will make it unless she gets it back), Ashley Wagner (who WON the LP this year at Nationals...but I perfer others to her).
I'm also sure we'll see poor Bebe Liang there again!
Kimmie Meissner should be back, but she will need to make up A LOT if she is to get a spot. Her best quality was her jumps and 3-3 combos. The 3-3's are probably gone, but last I saw her she didn't even have the jumps!
Emily Hughes will probably be back too...say what you want about this girl (and her thighs) I like her.
Best of all Sasha Cohen is returning and if she is anywhere where she left off she can easily get a spot on the Olympic team.
And...maybe...Michelle Kwan will be returning. This is going to be THE LAST chance if there is going to be a chance at all and I know she will give it all she has to be in top form. I don't think she will embarrass herself...meaning that if she isn't ready, she won't be there to compete. On the other hand, she might just show up just to compete one last time at the Nationals (which she says are her favorite competition) and make us all cry.
I don't count her out at all. If she can get consistant with all she had in 2005 and all the other try 3-3's and fall, then she could surpass them with a less difficult program.

I thought that Nancy's program was SO MUCH MORE difficult than Oksana's...especially when you consider the mistakes that Oksana made.
Artistic Impression is always subjective...but the majority of the people usually give that nod to Oksana. However, I don't think that anyone could argue that Nancy was WAY ahead of Oksana technically. And it is supposed to be a sport first.
But then Nancy had to bring Mickey Mouse into the picture! The coverage of her talking to her coach and Lu Chen waiting for Oksana to appear before the medal ceremony is on youtube if you have never seen it.
It's one of those things that everyone probably would say if no one was around, but not when a camera is there!

^I'm with you on Nancy. I didn't think she ever did anything remarkable on the ice. She wasn't better than anyone as far as I'm concerned. Especially not the THEN fabulous Oksana!
Talk about inconsistent-Kimmie Meisner has lost it.

Oksana was never great...she won with the motherless waif routine...she won because she threw in a crappy triple at the end of her shaky program and was dubbed courageous. She won with the dying swan crap. Nancy is a douchbag who simply was a better skater.
Oksana was always a joke to me...but never more than her telephone routine with the cord hanging off the receiver...hilarious, and she was unable to leave the ice at that stage.

I hated Oksana's program in the '94 Olympics, and never really cared for her any way. Doodle, you're so right with that comment. Don't even get me started on the Russian ice dancing couple that won their gold medal with that hideous 50s inspired number. What a joke!
Poor Nancy, she always seemed to crumble under pressure ('93 World's anyone), yet I was very impressed with her performance at the '94 Olympics, especially after the knee bashing.

OMG! Grishuk and Platov...although you have to admire Evgeny Platov for putting up with her!
But that 1994 Olympic Gold should have gone to Torville and Dean...not just because of their name...but rather their skating!
To their credit Grishuk and Platov had a MUCH better program to win gold again in 1998.
But then there was their compulsory mistake. People who defend them say it was a minor mistake...but in the compulsory dances it should have been HUGE!
It's upsetting that they have TWO Olympic Gold Medals and Bourne and Kratz have NONE!
We'll never know if they would have won the bronze in 2002 had they not fallen at the end, but I kinda think they would have been in 4th anyways.

I HATED Oksana Grishuk, but Evgeni Platov was cute!
Their gold medal over the great Torville and Dean was disgusting.

Grishuk and Rudy Galindo were both judges on "Skating's Next Star" and it was so funny because all they would do was flirt with the male skaters!
Poor Elvis Stojko was the only to take it seriously.
And you know who I really hate? The reining Olympic Ice Dance Champs...Navka and Kostomorov! Talk about just being stock and stoic Russian! That's all they were!
Now there is some new Russian Ice Dance team that's probably going to win again!

I think that you might have sent me a PM about it!
Also...don't forget her "new" name Pasha! I think she went back to Oksana now...but you can't change your first name and then just go back like to the original like no one remembers! She and Prince should just do an album/sex tape together...

Speaking of which, does anyone know why Bourne and Kratz do not skate together anymore?
