Former figure skating champion and Olympian Nicole Bobek was released on bond Tuesday after pleading not guilty in a New Jersey court to a drug conspiracy charge, the prosecutor's office said.
Bobek, 31, who won the U.S figure skating title in 1995, was arrested at her home in Jupiter, Florida, last week on a charge of conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine in Hudson County, New Jersey, according to Guy Gregory of the Hudson County prosecutor's office...

Posted: 7/7/09 at 8:50pmI was just checking to see if anyone posted this yet! She was always the wild child of figure skating. I liked her presence on the ice- she was just never consistent. Too bad for her!

OMG! She looks AWFUL! She always looked older than she was, but that is awful.
However...to those know figure skating, it's probably not a suprise to see something like this from her!
I was thinking it might be Oksana Grishuk, but then I saw Nicole and it was completely believable!

I remember her. She was a trouble maker even back in the day.
Remember that trouble maker boy skater? What was his name? I think he may have overdosed now that I think about it.

Clevername, I believe you mean Christopher Bowman who died a year or two ago.
When I saw the headline on MSN this morning, I figured it would be Tonya. Who knew that Nicole wasn't a natural blonde?

I never suspected Nicole would end up this way. What I do remember was how inconsistent a akater she was. At the end of her program she'd either be ecstatic or crying hysterically. I always thought she was really attractive on the ice.
What kind of trouble did she used to get into back then, clever?

I would say her hair was dyed black...but I'm bad at that stuff.
Also look at her face! Either that is light from the flash or she has some MASSIVE sun damage to her skin!

I think that most of her trouble making when she was a skater had to do with her reputation for being an "underage party girl" and bad training habits.
She basically changed coaches so many times as an excuse for her results, thinking that she would improve by changing coaches rather than training more seriously.
HUGE waste of talent!

Thanks, Dottie, Yes, it was Christopher Bowman I was thinking of.
And MTV already anwered, Jane. I think she was known as a bit of a party girl.

Dottie, I also remember her spiral. Bad days notwithstanding, she was quite the athlete.
I loved her costumes, too. She looked like a doll on the ice!

If you read stuff by Christine Brennan you know she is going to be all over this, as she only said negative things about her in her books.
Speaking of her books, I hope she writes another one! She might be biased in her writing, but I do like reading them!

The sport went to hell when they eliminated compulsory figures.
Anyone with me on that?

Posted: 7/8/09 at 7:31amTiming is everything, PJ. If not for compulsories, Janet Lynn might have been considered the greatest skater ever. She was almost untouchable in the free skate, but was always coming from so far behind that she struggled to win major international competitions.
#21re: Another Figure Skating Felon? - Move over Tonya
Posted: 7/8/09 at 7:44amAnd here I thought I was the only one who remembered Janet Lynn. I always liked her.

They changed it for the Janet Lynn's but when they ended compulsories, they took all the discipline out of the sport and anyone with flashy moves could win.
It would be as if they suddenly told ballet dancers they no longer had to do barre work.

I'm with you on the compulsories, PJ. I aways wondered why the American skaters didnt practice those more...it was a regular problem at the competitions. The top American would lose to a lesser free skater because they started in 30th place after the first round.
That said, Janet Lynn's Afternoon of the Faun was exquisite.

I remember Yuka Sato doing a great job recreating it after she went pro, but noone could top Janet.
BTW, Nicole's mugshot is not surprising...meth ruins your skin by making you compulsively (pun intended) pick and scratch at it.
Nicole was such a talent. It was always hearbraking that she never lived up to her potential. She had great choreography, costumes (remembering her last competitive year when she had a greek theme) and a gorgeous spiral and her body looked so great on the ice. She seemed to tower over the other skaters. Commentators judges and fans were always pulling for her.

I'm glad compulsory figures are gone...granted I was WAY too young to watch anything when they were around (but I know my history well!).
Figures allowed judges to fix competition even more than they already do.
The new judging system is trying to even further take that away.
