From the moment this all started, I've been worried about gays in general being made the scapegoat, and I'm still thinking that could turn out to be the case. From a NYT article on Sunday:

"As word of Representative Mark Foley’s sexually explicit e-mail messages to former pages spread last week, Republican strategists worried — and Democrats hoped — that the sordid nature of the scandal would discourage conservative Christians from going to the polls.

But in dozens of interviews here in southeastern Virginia, a conservative Christian stronghold that is a battleground in races for the House and Senate, many said the episode only reinforced their reasons to vote for their two Republican incumbents in neck-and-neck re-election fights, Representative Thelma Drake and Senator George Allen.

“This is Foley’s lifestyle,” said Ron Gwaltney, a home builder, as he waited with his family outside a Christian rock concert last Thursday in Norfolk. “He tried to keep it quiet from his family and his voters. He is responsible for what he did. He is paying a price for what he did. I am not sure how much farther it needs to go.”

The Democratic Party is “the party that is tolerant of, maybe more so than Republicans, that lifestyle,” Mr. Gwaltney said, referring to homosexuality."

“But there is a bigger moral issue which I would say is the prism I view this through: I do not believe in homosexuality.”

Yup. I've been expecting the same thing.

Just read the articles about the Kolbe connection and see the innuendo dripping from them. (He invited pages to his HOUSE? WHAT? I mean, never mind that he wasn't actually going to be there at the time, but just...ICK!)

In the last ten days, the big political news story has been which one?

1) The Bill that legalises torture of adults and children and which labels opponents of the government
'Unlawful Enemy Combatants' who may be detained without trial and handed over to a military tribunal

2) The revelations in Woodward's new book that Condi Rice was given clear warnings by the CIA of terror attacks in mid-2001 and her subsequent denials followed by retractions

3) The Foley sex scandal

Wonder why?

There's already a backlash against the backlash, with those born-agains vowing to go to the polls in droves. As opined here and elsehwere, all of this has been bad news for issues of gal tolerence.

The use of "I am a Gay American" in the same sentence with "I'm an alcoholic" is meant to send a signal to the tsk-tsking faithful: I have two problems, with one I pick up a drink, the other a page. That's this Florida bottom's bottom line.

I read a GREAT article where one Virginian Republican said this is why Democrats can't be in power, because they allow things like this to happen.

Seriously, I just do not get the bubble some people live in where the faults of Clinton are Clinton's fault, the faults of Bush are Clinton's fault, and any time a Republican f's up, it's the Democrats' fault.
