I have NOT read the book. I OWN the book, but I have not read it...
Is it very different from the film? - Addison
It's been a long while, more than a decade I'm sure, since I read the book. From what I recall it's fairly close to the film, but I'd say the movie is better. I don't have a very retentive memory, which is probably one reason I can watch and enjoy the same movies again and again; with books, though, I'm a slow-to-moderate reader, so tend to not reread books much. (My husband, on the other hand, rereads books a lot but doesn't care to rewatch many films.)
Besty, re. Munster Go Home, yeah, I was checking out used availability on Amazon last night. Haven't ordered a copy yet but I sure will be soon. (Not the collectible $120 one though! Yikes! Under ten bucks is more my speed.)
"Guilty pleasures" -- I guess my definition as applied in the OP is a bit loose. Knowing that the hubby will not be quite as thrilled as me to see Pillow Talk yet again, I might feel a mite "guilty" to subject him to it. Thus a personal guilty pleasure. I also know he has great tuning-out ability, so I never feel too bad about it. Plus the deal is that I pretty much OWN the tv between 8 and 10 PM -- I told him it's a state law, nothing he can do.

There's a strange little film called MADAM SATAN from 1930, an early musical comedy, it seems pretty obvious that there are musicians playing the music just off camera. A little comedy of infidelity gets blown up into full-out gonzo weirdness in the final third, which takes place at a costume ball on a zeppelin. No, really. Mad Art Deco sets and costumes and some of the worst songs you'll ever hear (along with some fine performances from Kay Johnson and Roland Young) make this just irresistible. Check it out sometime.
I forgot to include...
Roeg's The Witches- And yes, Sharon Needles' Facebook status reminded me of the omission.
Ernest Saves Christmas
We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story- The film that made me want to live in New York City, I was three. Dinosaurs are reanimated and become circus sideshow acts. Julia Child voices a famous archaeologist. What is there not to love?
1776
Heathers
Return of the Living Dead
Repo Man
Romy & Michelle's High School Reunion
Clueless
Clue
Basket Case & Brain Damage- Frank Henenlotter is like the prospective, slightly more deranged Sam Raimi had Raimi never made it to the other side after Evil Dead 2. Brain Damage in particular serves as an allegory for the 'Just Say No' mindset with a phallic parasitic slug creature feeding off of victims' brains that puts the victims into a hallucinogenic frenzy. Did I mention that this slug talks and does vaudeville routines? It also features a death scenes ever film that prepared me for the fried chicken scene in Killer Joe than anything else out there. Also a very good call back to New York City in the 80s.
^Half of the movies you listed there require no guilt, strummergirl, even by the strictest standards.
I don't think "Shock Treatment" is a bad movie. It looks dated as hell and its production values, for the most part, come off bargain-basement, but its satire and psychology have major teeth. Also, most of the music is great.
It's widely reviled among RHPS enthusiasts, but I love it equally and always have.

I'd like SHOCK TREATMENT a lot more if they'd gotten a more appealing lead than Cliff DeYoung. Was he really the best they could find?

You are one guilty guy, Carlos.
I love Cliff de Young in it, Roscoe. That's probably the best thing he's ever done. I've seen the movie 30 or more times, and I never think it's the same actor playing Brad and Farley.
