Dame, yes, tea is said to be a diuretic. (spelling)

If I am going to have it before going to bed I run the risk of having to sit on the throne when I need to sleep. ANYTHING ONE TAKES HAS ITS ISSUES. Including tea.

"I think it's germane to the discussion about anxiety that too often we are told to just look inward, that the problem is within us and because of that, it's up to us to fix ourselves (and not only that, but only WE can do it). That article acknowledges the terrific stress and anxiety that is produced by the seemingly monolithic cultural forces at play in contemporary life."

Well said, Namo!

The forces that control our lives in the modern world are often vast and essentially invisible to us (the housing market, stockpiled nuclear weapons, climate change, to take but a few examples). No wonder so many of us suffer from some form of "Generalized" Anxiety Disorder. If we were anxious over something we could actually combat, we might substitute action for anxiety.

And since fewer and fewer of us believe some deity intervenes at will in earthly affairs, prayer may be nothing more than an exercise in creative "play". People in earlier times actually thought they had control over things like the weather through devotions and sacrifices made to their gods.

Thanks again everyone for your stories and suggestions regarding this. Seeing a new Dr tomorrow and hopefully will be able to come up with something effective for me. Again, I truly appreciate all of the support and tips in dealing with this. My anxiety was at its worst the last week and looking forward to hopefully feeling better as soon as possible :)

Anxiety

Had a great visit with my new DR and am optimistic with what he recommended. Started me on Zoloft and Atarax (hydroxyzine) for immediate relief of the anxiety/panic attacks. Took it about a hour ago and already feel significantly calmer that I have in a long, long time. It's an antihistamine and apparently has great success in relieving anxiety. Finally starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. The only side effect is drowsiness, but they said it often goes away after a few days of taking the med. It has no addictive qualities to it and my Dr said it can be much more effective for me in the long term than something like Xanax.

Had an appointment with a psychologist scheduled after my regular DR visit and of course with my luck, she called out sick and it was cancelled. Though my doc said it would be better to see a psychiatrist so they can manage the medication as well as coming up with other techniques to deal with the anxiety.

This med seems fairly quick acting (already feeling so much better in just a hour of taking it), so hopefully, this is a great step to relief from this.

I've been taking medication for depression and anxiety for almost 20 years. Initially you may have some side effects from the anti-depressant, it might take a good 3-4 weeks before those side effects stop happening. Good luck modern medicine has saved my life. Brain chemistry not working properly is not a sign of weakness. Like you I had 3 panic attacks before I started medication. I'll be taking them my whole life and I feel there is no stigma attached.

Funny how Headband thinks anyone on this message board gives a rat's ass what it or it's friends thing. Just sayin'

I guess I'm taking the bait, but I did read that Vice article. I've not read any others by that writer, so I can't say for sure if the questions I have would be answered elsewhere, but she never says why she stopped taking Effexor, except that she decided it wasn't working. But she doesn't say how it stopped working. And I would think that if it wasn't working, she wouldn't want to go back on it. But I've never taken Effexor.

There's a weird push from certain corners to get people off the meds they take for anxiety, depression, etc. I'm not the first person to say this, but you'd never say to a diabetic, "So when do you think you're going to wean yourself off the insulin?"

It's not an exact science, sure, and I know it can be frustrating to deal with the trial and error of find the right meds (or combination of meds and therapy or whatever it takes), but my anecdotal experience shows me that the various psychiatric meds help people more than they harm them.

Also. has the Headband settled on how old he is? He can't seem to keep that straight.

That link just takes me to the Vice homepage.

Yeah, I had to hunt down the article by Googling the title. I guess there's an issue with linking directly to the Vice articles, because I tried to do it and couldn't

Mildred, I'm so glad to hear that your appointment went well, and you're finding relief.

While I don't suffer from anxiety or depression, I lived with someone for years who did, and I know the terrible struggle it can be to find the right balance of meds and other forms of help. My experience was that, over time, the meds needed to be revised as either his needs changed or newer options became available. Don't be afraid to speak up if things change. Developing a solid rapport with your doctor will be important.

I was given Atarax when I was in the hospital this past January. It was administered along with other medications as we were trying to get an infection under control. I was quite relaxed during my entire hospital stay.

I wish you ALL the best on your journey, Mildred! And, keep us posted.

Anxiety and Depression (the other thread) are important things to discuss. I know for myself who suffers from both, it is easy to try and lock it all away, where it festers and worsens. By discussing it and talking it through helps and once you realise other people are in the same boat, it is a step forward in getting help.

Well said, SNAFU.

As for Effexor, I took it for awhile, then weaned myself off it with no ill effects.

My point is not that the VICE article is untrue, but that everyone is different. I wouldn't make any decisions based on internet anecdotes.

Well I'm a few days into this new anti-anxiety med and it's working a lot, I just feel like a zombie because of the sedative affects of it. Had a huge panic attack earlier but took the med and helped it quite a bit. Apparently the fatigue from this med is supposed to wear off but hasn't for me yet. Fingers crossed.
