Wow. That was by far the best episode of the show I've seen yet. It was not only funny, but extremely interesting and informative. If you haven't seen it yet, I won't spoil it for you, but you need to watch it.

Brilliant segment. I always marvel at how John Oliver makes these important stories so engaging and informative, and it feels like every week he does it better. I'm so glad this show exists.

I am lucky enough to design and build things for this show, (Jeff the diseased lung for example). His work is brilliant, fully bringing the proper amount of outrage, with humor, to raise the Public's awareness on VERY serious issues, not covered by main stream media. BRAVO John!

I love John Oliver, but I don't understand what all the fuss is this week. Yeah, using the dick pic as a narrative device was kind of funny and, yes, it's interesting to see a relatively rare interview with Snowden himself, but unless you haven't read a newspaper or watched a [legitimate, like PBS NewsHour] newscast in the past couple of years, nothing in this episode was illuminating or new.

I dunno, the man-on-the street interviews were cheap and lazy. Also, I find it hard to believe that most people regularly tuning in to John Oliver's show don't know about Snowden's leaks and the subsequent NSA scanadal. Again, big fan of Oliver's. Think he's easily eclipsed The Daily Show in terms of quality and relevance, but this week's show is being wildly overpraised. I hardly think I personally have an in-depth knowledge of everything related to Snowden and the NSA, but I certainly didn't learn anything new or gain a new perspective on any of the issues related to national security and domestic spying.
Yes, if someone has never heard of Snowden or never read an article in The Guardian or the NY Times on this issue I can see how the episode would be illuminating - I just don't think those people are in Oliver's audience.

I don't think that the episode was a meant to be illuminating at all. I think that the episode was trying to prove that it's shocking that the average Joe doesn't know or care or even pay attention to the scary things that the government is doing/able to do with regards to their privacy. That's the point that was trying to be made. Yes, anyone who's watching John Oliver and are the show's target audience know what Snowden did and what has been going on regarding the NSA. The shocking part was that the majority do not.

That actually makes sense and I can kind of buy into the concept, but if that's really what the overall point was, I think the method they used to illustrate it - rebooting Leno's Jaywalking comedic stylings - wasn't the most sound. I suppose it makes regular viewers of Oliver's feel superior to those supposed troglodytes parading around spouting their ignorance, but I'm not sure where that leaves us. Then again, HBO was good enough to put nearly the entire ep up on YouTube, so maybe they are making a good faith effort to reach people for whom this message is more than a jolly good pat on the back for being smarter than the average joe.
