Anyone have a Moviepass subscription?

I just heard about this and I know there are a lot of posters here who see tons of movies. I was curious to see if anyone had it on here and if you think it's worth it. It's 29.99 a month and you can see as many movies as you want with some restrictions. It's 2d movies only and you can only see one movie a day and each movie only once.
I started going to the movies more often with getting discounted tickets from triple a but those are still about 8 bucks a ticket. I think if I ended up becoming a member to this that I'd definitely go to more movies since there are always tons of movies I want to see but I don't think most are worth the money.
Thoughts?

Posted: 3/10/13 at 11:29amMy best friend swears by it. I personally don't see movies enough for it to be worth my while- but if you're seeing three or more of the latest movies a month, it seems like it's a good deal.

I have it and mostly I like it. I pay $34.99/month for it though and not $29.99.
I wish you could see 3D movies with it, but the biggest drawback is only being able to see one movie a day. My friends and I thought it would be a good way to stop having to movie hop all weekend, but alas you still have to sneak in to a double feature.
You have to check in at the theater and then you have 30 min to purchase your ticket.
Overall I highly recommended it.

I do.
It's very good. The customer service is amazing. If the app/website fails to check in, you take a picture of the ticket stub and they refund you the cost.
The limits--one film a day and only able to see each title once--are well worth the benefits if you see a lot of films. I'm in that awkward place between earning money off of a film website and being offered a lot of screeners or invitations to critic screenings. If my schedule allows, I can see every new release in theaters of interest to my readers for $35/month. That means not having to squeeze in matinees (mercifully only $6 here even though MoviePass bumps me to NYC rates due to proximity) for cost. I can see a horror film on opening night with a full audience and see how other people react. I don't have to turn friends or family down when they want to go see a movie because I've budgeted the cost of MoviePass into my monthly expenses.
Also, if you have the AMC Stubs card, purchases with MoviePass count toward your reward spending total. It takes 3 films a month to justify the cost of MoviePass and, at that minimum amount, 3 months to get $10 in free credit from AMC theaters. I'm averaging a free afternoon ticket or snacks every two months now between the two programs.

I'm not seeing a $29.99 a month plan. Does it matter where you live?

Posted: 3/10/13 at 4:07pmIt might Jordan, I used this link https://www.moviepass.com/lifehacker and after I entered my zip code, I'm in Staten Island. It gave me the $29.99 price a month for an annual plan.

Posted: 3/10/13 at 4:09pmThe plans are region coded. I don't know how well a work around will work. I was in the first public beta and they bumped my rate up a month later when they realized my town in Bergen County was not, in fact, in South Jersey.

I just signed up! With the link and the promo code I'm happy. Hopefully the rate will stick but even if it goes up another $5 a month, it's still a great deal.
Do I need to wait for my card to arrive in the mail or can I use it tonight?

Gotta wait, it says "Your subscription will not begin until you receive your MoviePass membership card (in approximately 5 business days in the continental US)."
I'm probably gonna sign up today as well.

Overall it is great. As long as you are a moviegoer that sees at least three movies a month it is totally worth it.
The app can be a bit of a pain in my opinion, but definitely workable.
The customer service for me has been good. I had one issue where I couldn't check in to a movie (the showtimes wouldn't show up for some reason) so I called them and he checked me in over the phone and loaded the card. Two minutes later I had bought my ticket and all was good.
My biggest concert with moviepass is the inability to buy tickets in advance. I know most people don't mind just walking up to the box office, but I feel that I am definitely going to run into issues with bigger blockbusters that will be sold out in advance.
But still, it is pretty great, and has definitely changed the way I see films. And yes, it is great that it works with your stubbs card. It also works on the Regal program too.

I signed up back in October and have it for $25.99 a month. I use it all the time and love it. I've saved something like $160 since then, since I go to the movies way too much. While I used to wait for certain films to come out on DVD, now I just go see them in theaters.
Even though you're only supposed to see each movie one time, I've seen most of the Oscar Films twice (once by myself and once with my sister once she got her MoviePass). This is one of the few products I swear by - wonderful service, excellent customer service!

Posted: 3/11/13 at 6:00pmTechnically, no. You can't see 3D movies or a movie twice. But the way MoviePass works is that it adds a certain amount of money to your card and then you go the theater and buy a ticket with that card. So you can tell the app you're going to see Parental Guidance and instead buy a ticket for Amour. Or you can tell it you're going to see Life of Pi and instead use it to pay for a majority of Life of Pi 3D, paying the difference of a few dollars yourself. I don't do this often, but there are times when I've already seen a movie or really want to see something in 3D.

Posted: 3/11/13 at 7:46pmThe MoviePass itself is a Discover card that MoviePass the company controls the amount of credit on. So, yes, if you go to the counter and ask them to split the payment, you can pay the difference for a 3D movie. And, yes, you could check into another film to get the money for the film you want to see again.

Posted: 3/11/13 at 9:03pmSo besides checking in to a movie online, they don't know what you actually get a ticket for at the theater?
#18Anyone have a Moviepass subscription?
Posted: 3/11/13 at 9:39pmIt's two separate processes. You go onto your Moviepass app and pick a movie, which costs (for example) $11. They then put $11 onto your Discover Card. You then go to the movie theater and purchase the ticket, using the funds on your card. So they should have no way of knowing what movie you're seeing, since all they are doing is loading money onto a card.

Posted: 3/11/13 at 9:50pmOh I see. Very interesting. I was wondering what the FAQ meant when it says you can't buy anything other than movie tickets with the card.

For the record, they definitely know what movie you are seeing.
The business model for MP is only partially based on membership revenue. The potential gold-mine is in the incredible amount of data they are mining on movie-goers' habits--what time of day you go, how far you travel, what route you travel, the timing of your decisions, where you go before and after the movie etc. etc. etc.
MP can offer advertisers, studios and theater owners an amazing quantity of precisely detailed information.

I have it and I LOVE it!! I've always gone to the movies at least once a week so it was PERFECT for me. I pay 28.99 a month (i think? i've only had it for three months) but have never had a problem and if I did I just called them up and was all was resolved very quickly. Highly recommend!!
the ONLY thing that's slightly annoying is, as someone mentioned above, you can only go to one movie per day so double features you still have to sneak into (which isn't THAT big a deal) and also (and this will probably out what a cinema nerd i am) my favorite theater in the city, the sunshine doesn't work with MoviePass which is kind of a drag but other than that it's sublime!
