Posted: 11/21/07 at 1:15pmI thought that he mispelled Taka as Take, the same way he occasionally misspells Namo with Name. Nothing wrong with that. I'm sorry if you feel that way, Namo. I'd really like for all of us to get along. I used to want truth. Now I only want peace.

Um, no need to search. This is a NEW thread about opera. Taka was asking who here and now was interested in chatting about opera.
Apparently I was one of the only ones.

no need to apologise, just was suggesting you could have found one of the older threads and ressurected it....that's all
I have always been a huge fan of opera, favs are Rossini, Mozart, Verdi. I have to be in the mood for Wagner, but can watch the Flying Dutchman anytime.
My highlight was seeing Don Giovanni at the Estates Theater in Prague in summer 2006, which is the same theater it premiered at in 1787 under the baton of Maestro Mozart.
It was done in the style of the time as best as they can know....simply amazing.

Posted: 11/21/07 at 2:07pmAll you guys who actually get to see operas are lucky. I'm forced to be content with the recordings because no one in my family wants to take me to an opera unless it's "Carmen". And God forbid that they take me to see Wagner or Strauss.

Wow...that much Wagner. I had to leave Parsifal at the Met after 4 hours, it was too much Wagner for me.

Believe it or not, misschung, but that's the very reason why mom refuses to take me to a Wagnerian opera. Funny thing is that my dad was Jewish and he enjoyed Wagner fine.

Lots of historical figures were dicks. Benjamin Franklin fought against letting the Germans into Pennsylvnia.
That doesnt mean we can't appreciate their art, we just have to have the background and understand. Wagner was very much about nationalism in his art, so there is a lot there under the surface that is kinda nasty when you pick it apart, but that doesn't mean we should throw it away.

That Franklin was a helluvan artist.
Taka, you should totally run away if your family is going to treat you so unfair.
You could hide out on the Student Board until things settle down.

Yes, but I can't talk about non-broadway related things in the theatre board.
Listen, Namo. I'm not trying to fight any fights, because I don't want to cause any controversy. If you check my post on another thread, you'll find that I'll never post another politics related post again, not because you're right and I'm wrong, or because I'm right and you're wrong, but because it's just not worth the fight.

Goodness.
Living in America, you should know that pacifism is for the weak.

If that was the case, then why the heck is Ghandi so famous? Martin Luther King? Both preached pacifism. That's what I'm trying to do. I admit that I got off to a nasty start, but now that I see what mess I've started, I feel obligated to end it.
(insert snide remark about me ending it by going to the student board here)

Posted: 11/21/07 at 4:02pmI LOVE opera! It's my dream to perform both on Broadway and at the Met. Strangely enough, I performed in The Merry Widow and The Pirates of Penzance my Junior and Senior years of HS, respectively. I used to dislike Wagner because of his anti-Semitism, but one has to realize that the music and the man are two separate entities.
