Did I miss the memo where I was talking about Republicans?
I was talking about religious people, I don't care what politial party they're affiliated with.

If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.
And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.
Just a couple of peace loving highlights form Leviticus...
You'll possibly excuse me if I have mistakenly equated religion with bigotry and violence.

Bigotry is not limited to a particular religion, nor is it limited to one particular political ideal.
People who are truly unbiased will not just support the rights of those who agree with them. For instance, should the KuKluxKlan or Westboro Baptist Church be entitled to protest events? The sad truth is, that as long as they do not cross the threshold into violence, they have every right. Their minority view, while unpopular and quite contrary to mine, is, and should be , protected . I know that once the rights of one group are violated, my rights coul dbe next..

ok, so bill clinton's a bigot? seriously?
and yeah, laws are better than beheadings and slaughter in my book. laws can be repealed and declared unconstitutional, death is rather final.

Posted: 12/21/04 at 1:22pmBill Clinton allowed a bigoted law to be passed with his name on it. Sounds like a bigot to me. (Really, it sounds like someone playing politics but, still, the resistance to gay marriage continues to be *only* put forth because of religious traditions. Democrats aren't that much better on the topic than Republicans because a) all of them want to be elected and b) it's still easy to be bigoted against gays without looking like a bigot because you can say a Magic Sky Person told you it's ok.)

But as my earlier link shows protests by a religious group did become violent and whadda ya know yesterday a sold-out show has now had to cancel it's entire run encroaching on the authors and actors freedom of speech.
A worrying prescedent has been set.

Clinton: I truly feel passed DADT and DOMA to prevent harsher legislation from passing in their place.
There has been plenty of murder by religious freaks in the history of this country: against Native Americans, African Americans, Jews, Gays, Abortion doctors, etc.

And this justifies religion how?

To address it in the specific -
since it began stopping my freedom of attending the theatre.
and in the general it needs to be justified in the way that anything that influences, holds powers and impacts on our lives need to be able to justify itself.

Posted: 12/21/04 at 2:16pmThat's my point. "It" is not attacking theater. People on the fringe who happen to be using religious justification are attacking theater. But I guess you're too busy congratulating yourself on your atheist perfection to realize that religion is something that can produce good and tolerance as well as harm and bigotry.

not sure if any of all that is aimed at me, but just in case, I would like to clarify that I do not equate terms like "religious freaks" with most Christians (or Jews or any other religion).

Posted: 12/21/04 at 2:22pmNope, it was addressed to Sister George's comment that religion needs to be justified because it attacks theater, a truly surreal opinion if I ever heard one.

People on the fringe...?
The 'faith leaders' had asked for the setting to be changed from a temple to a community centre.
The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Birmingham, the Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, said: "Such a deliberate, even if fictional, violation of the sacred place of the Sikh religion demeans the sacred places of every religion."

This must mean anyone who has any religious beliefs whatsoever is an anti-theater freak. Right? Because something about believing in a higher power automatically makes you into a bigoted, foaming-at-the-mouth bastard. Therefore, the existence of religion really can't be justified.
Am I getting your logic right?

Let's draw a line from post to post-
I pointed out that many "religious" crusades are actually economic in nature. You said, and I quote:
And this justifies religion how?
I responded by asking since when religion needs to be justified. You replied, and I quote:
since it began stopping my freedom of attending the theatre.
Therefore, I concluded, strangely enough, that you were accusing religion of attacking theater. Silly me.
Say what you mean or don't talk at all. You're making yourself look as foolish as any religious nutjob.

Plum,
I say this with love in my heart:
Take a nap.
I know you're tired. So take a nap.
People are very passionate about this subject (as I'm sure you know). And speaking from a place of pure passion isn't always going to yield the most coherent thoughts. But you have to recognize that passion and that it comes from a very real place. As an Israeli, I'm surprised you don't see where these very real (though perhaps a little irrational) thoughts are coming from.
But, then again, though things are HARDLY a bed of roses in Israel, you were the majority. You had a support system in place, through your government and families. That support system does not truly exist in this country (or, indeed, the UK) for gays and lesbians.
So please, for your sake, take a nap...get refreshed...and come back.
