Posted: 9/10/13 at 2:43pmI upgraded right when the 4s came out. I just called them.. and when I choose to upgrade I will still be grandfathered in. However.. I get a Viacom corporate rate thru Verizon. So it might have to do with that. I definitely use all my data. So that would be a point of contention.

Posted: 9/10/13 at 2:52pmThe screenshots of the home screen look pretty much the same, though the icons themselves have been redesigned. It certainly doesn't look like the version of Windows 8 that the tablets use, nor what I've seen of the Windows Phone OS with the various sized and spaced icons.

Posted: 9/10/13 at 2:52pmDAME, sounds like you upgraded before Verizon instated the "no grandfathering unlimited data" rule.

I disagree Dame. I had an iPhone for years but switched because I could never get one that worked right for more than 6 months. (Usually the home button stopped working).
I switched to the new Windows Phone and I find the os far superior to ios. But now it looks like Apple copied it.

DAME - I'll have to respectfully disagree with you that the 5s isn't a significant update. The new processor alone is worth the price tag. I suck at typing on my iPhone, but I do know my technology and commonly use my iPhone for business in which I have to run several different apps at a time; primarily connected to video and audio editing/reviewing/etc. Look at this monster!
> 64-bit Apple A7 chip on board with over a billion transistors (32-bit and 64-bit apps are supported)
> The first-of-its-kind chip packs twice as many transistors in a piece of silicon roughly the same size as the A6 - 102mm squared.
>A native 64-bit kernel, libraries and drivers are all part of the package.
>The graphics, featuring OpenGL ES 3.0, are also twice as fast

Erik.. whatever works for you. I will never go to a windows or Droid phone again. Was nothing but a nightmare for me. Keeping it all Apple. It is what works for me. But will probably wait one more year for a upgrade.
@ Liza.. you are right. I guess I should have said.. the upgrades that are significant for me.

"Mille I might have. So I will always be grandfathered in?"
As long as you never upgrade your new phone at a discounted rate, you should be. At least that is my understanding of the situation. I've only had Verizon, but I'm assuming AT&T is the same.

Well I do know I can upgrade my phone at a discounted rate. They offered it to me and told me my plan would stay the same.

Posted: 9/10/13 at 3:35pmI was a Blackberry gal, but my 3gs was my first iPhone. I upgraded to 4S last year. I have never had a moment of real trouble from either of them. I just replaced the battery in my 3gs today so my daughter can play with apps and watch little cartoons on it. I am an iPhone addict.

I've upgraded to the 4S, after the discontinuation of the unlimited plans, with AT&T, using the upgrade price, and kept my unlimited data. So far AT&T has announced no plans to do otherwise, though they will throttle unlimited users who exceed a certain amount of data (I think it's now like 5GB a month on the LTE plans).
"I switched to the new Windows Phone and I find the os far superior to ios. But now it looks like Apple copied it."
And I'm sorry. I'm not seeing the similarities in the design between the two operating systems that you are claiming to see.

"Well I do know I can upgrade my phone at a discounted rate. They offered it to me and told me my plan would stay the same."
Who is "they?" Sometimes those teenager phone store workers don't know their left from their right and will give you incorrect information. I opened up my account on Verizon as an individual, then merged with my family's plan. When I did that, I lost the $50 credit I had towards a new phone because I was no longer the primary account holder. I've also had an encounter with extremely rude workers at a Verizon store near my apartment.
If that is what they told you, that your plan would stay the same, I would make sure to verify this includes unlimited data. I'd be interested in finding out what happens, because this is one of the only things that is keeping me from upgrading my phone.

The only similarity I see between the new iPhone and the windows phone is the color. That's about it.
This news makes me a little sad that my feature phone died a couple of months ago. I wanted to get an iPhone and was waiting to upgrade until I could afford one. The 4 was free, but too old for my liking, so I ended up getting a Droid Razr M because it was free at the time I was upgrading. I like it, but still keep my iPod around for my music.

Posted: 9/10/13 at 4:36pm@Millie. THEY is Verizon. But as I said here before.. I am under a corporate plan.. so I am not sure if that has anything to do with anything. But I do know that when I upgrade I WILL be grandfathered in.

OK, an iPhone user offline informed me that you can configure the device to act as a mobile hotspot via the Personal Hotspot feature. It seems that Verizon allows you to connect up to 5 devices to your iPhone at the same time while AT&T limits you to three. The endpoints can be any wifi-enabled device.
One of my biggest regrets is sticking with AT&T for 12 years now. I lost my unlimited data plan when I was basically forced to upgrade from a 3G feature phone to a 4G Nokia phone running Windows Mobile 8. I'm starting to feel the tug of an iPhone though but won't be eligible to switch phones until next year under my AT&T plan.
Have fun with your new iPhones!

Posted: 9/11/13 at 4:02amKeep in mind the "no hotspot" and limiting of devices is all about your carrier. The iPhone 4 automatically comes with the functionality to be used as a wifi hotspot. I do it all the time. The US carriers just make you pay extra for it. I think AT&T charges $50 a month or something similar.

Posted: 9/11/13 at 11:11amWill it be uncool to have the gold? I saw somebody tweet that it's pretentious. I don't care what people think, I just don't want people to think I am pretentious. I've had too much education and exposure to culture for that.
