Even though I feel male and female circumcision can't be compared, I do feel that male circumcision also has its roots in fear of sex and the body and is an oppression of men. That is not to say most men feel oppressed who have been cut. However, lobbing off a boys foreskin is really a short cut so that generations of parents did not have to have sex talks with their boys or explain the sexual organs or how they work. Also, the dulling of the male sex organ's pleasure if clearly a benefit of a more puritanical time.

Let’s not forget that foreskin is also sold and used in some cosmetic products. Any company that profits from selling or purchasing and using foreskin fibroblasts in their products would want to make sure that the circumcision rate in this country stays high so that they can continue to make a profit.

I'm still not sure why this may be so, but we are told by the World Health Organization that "There is compelling evidence that male circumcision reduces the risk of heterosexually acquired HIV infection in men by approximately 60%."

Edit to add: Here's an article from Scientific American with an explanation

The topic of circumcision has come up a few times in my diabetes support group. An uncircumcised male has enormous problems when he's diabetic. You've all heard of how diabetics have to massage and lotion their feet on a nightly basis. That's because diabetes affects nerve endings and so many of them are in our feet. The same is true in the penis. One man in our group is uncut and, although he is fastidious in his personal habits, he frequently develops yeast infections and has been told that the only real remedy will be circumcision: not a pleasant thought for someone who's approaching 60.

I vote in favor of circumcising infants. It really is the healthier option.

I have an 8 year old son. He is cut. Honestly there was just not a question about it, the doctors just did it. They brought him back to me right away and he was not crying at all. I don't think it's that big of a deal. But it's an individual decision, and if you don't want to do it, then by all means don't do it.

I think the statistical chance of me getting my dick caught in my zipper are higher than getting any of those infections circumcision is supposed to protect me from.

And, if I am going to get it caught, then I would rather get my foreskin caught than my glans which is much more sensitive. But then my glans is still smooth and shiny like the photos on the right of the link in JG2's 11/16/11 01:09 post; it might not hurt as much if it were like the photos on the left.

I've also spoken to the friend I mention and (takes sharp intake of breath) he finds that circumcised men are more difficult to bring to orgasm than uncircumcised. To such an extent that he's usually relieved to return to a circumcised man after an uncircumcised one.

However that's anecdotal. Here's something that's objective and has no commercial hidden agenda:

i guess for me, the dna sequence for the penis includes a foreskin. circumcision is a cultural prerogative.
it does bother me that some factions use (what i believe) to be false science to hide behind when it comes to this issue. my step-sister is a doctor, and there is no conclusive scientific evidence to suggest that circumcision increases the health of the individual. what evidence there exists is highly speculative.

second, why can't we just admit that it's a cultural trend? whether we're hiding behind national identity (U.S., South Korea), or we using other cultural makers (religion)?

but to suggest that it's a biological enhancement is deeply troubling to me. because it's manipulating science to support something it doesn't necessarily support. again, we biologically evolved with the foreskin. one could argue that it's an archaic trait, but i guess i find that line of thinking problematic.

I have a partial circumcision from when I was a baby--or at least that's what my doctor's called it, but basically it just means I have a bit more foreskin than many cut guys. I'm 31 and have noticed that, religion aside, I seem to be right at around the "break off" point of when many people my age, at least here in Canada are cut or not--younger guys nearly always tend not to be, older tend to be (this is a strictly unscientific study :P ). When I lived in Quebec more Francophone men of any age I'd umm encounter, were uncut as well--and the year I lived in London and Dublin I also noticed the same (this thread should really just be about what a slut I apparently am).

I wouldn't do it to a child I have--and I think it's probably an old fashioned practice, but for myself personally, it's not something I've ever been upset I had done to me the way I know some men have. Meh. I'm sure some will argue against me but, while I've noticed I am a bit less sensitive than uncut guys (and so can be a bit too rough with them), I honestly don't feel like I'm missing out on reams of pleasure.

Bono, on The Daily Show, for AIDS Day just basically said that "male circumcision" was one thing that could be done for the "scourge of AIDS"... Wonder if it'll get much of a reaction.

My sister gave birth to a son a few years ago after the World Health Organisation announced their study on HIV infection in circumcised & uncircumcised men; obviously they found that the infection rate was much higher in uncircumcised men.

I'm circumcised and don't have any negative thoughts about it, although if I were to have a son I wouldn't have it done. My sister had her son circumcised - in spite of saying they weren't going to - so I was really surprised she did, but then she told me, "If he turns out to be gay, I want to do whatever I can for him to prevent him contracting HIV." I'm gay, and the fact that she put it in those words stopped me in my tracks.

For myself, I don't believe there is anything missing from sex -- but like other people on here, I've known grown men who've had to have it done (one specifically because he didn't keep himself clean; he was straight), and I can't tell you how much pain it caused them.

After hearing my sister's words, I might think differently if I ever had a son.
