Who's heard it?
"But it was ultimately just a tease. While Gaga may be naked on the album's cover, it's telling that her body isn't flesh and blood, but a statue. No sooner had the lead single, "Applause," been released than Gaga was quickly reverting to outlandish costumes almost like a reflex. The choice of "Applause," a love letter to her fans (or, rather, her fan's love), as Artpop's first single is indicative of Gaga's continued enabling of her co-dependent relationship with her "little monsters," and rather than open herself up to a wider audience, the song only further cocoons her. And her articulation of the album's theme has been, to be generous, ever-evolving. As she admits on the title track, "Artpop could be anything"!

I like Gaga, but I found the album highly repetitive and terribly self-indulgent. How many songs do we need about how the world is after her? Gaga singing about being the underdog just doesn't have much impact anymore. They're well crafted pop songs but I find little art there. It really plays like a Fame/Monster/Born This Way B-Sides album. I also suggest she looks at herself for the reason she's had so many toxic relationships. It can't be the other person's fault, every time, right?

Posted: 11/12/13 at 1:52pmI only streamed it once. I'll buy it this week. She does sound like she was actually there when she showed up to sing.

It's her best album to date, imo. There are some clunkers, to be sure: really not a fan of trap so "Jewels n' Drugs" does nothing for me, the lyrics to "Donatella" are mostly nonsense, and "Fashion!" has yet to grow on me. But everything else is pop gold: accessible, catchy, yet sonically powerful and the vocals are her best yet.
My favorite tracks are "G.U.Y", "SeX Dreams", "Gypsy", and the stoner in me adores "Mary Jane Holland". "Dope" and "MANiCURE" are also up there. I've observed some people commenting about how the songs aren't memorable, not really sure what to say about that. Regardless, great melodies and choruses here, with soundscapes that range from trippy to jarring to somber to exhilarating. The difference between her and her peers is that, while it is decidedly electronic, it also manages to feel personal. Which is not a surprise, she co-produced every track. What I mean is that she tends to take the genre into directions that others (without naming) would never even dream of. I admire that about her. Great stuff, there are certainly numerous potential hits for her to choose from.

I don't see where you're getting any of this, to be honest.

I like Venus and Manicure, but there was nothing in this album I found enthusing.

I only found a couple of tracks memorable, but then, I've felt that way about her previous albums. To me, they become memorable when the media are told which tracks to pummel the public with and I'm inundated with them every day. Therefore, Applause seems memorable, though my reaction from my first listen remains the same. It's a mediocre track in the Gagasphere that my brain consistently wants to mashup with the superior Bad Romance.

Posted: 11/12/13 at 3:15pmyeah, I like "Applause" much more now than I did upon first listen, but it's still no match for something like "GUY" or "Swine". Catchy as hell, though, and it works perfectly as a closing song.
