Ashley Simpson's SNL Flub?

I don't know, Tiff - I was blaming it on the SNL sound guys - in the other thread I was wondering if TPTB at SNL had asked her to put the blame on her band, but according to Marc it actually was the drummer. I believe him.
And yes, you are on the list. If you REALLY want to see a VERY amateur production of FIDDLER ON THE ROOF (with one professional caliber singer)...just let me know.

Re: Elvis Costello
That IS NOT AT ALL what happened. Costello planned everything that happened during that performance. Elvis' label (and I believe the NBC censors) insisted he perform "Less Than Zero" on SNL. He and his band played the first few measures of that song, but then stopped suddenly and broke into a great, raucus version of "Radio Radio" which the censors and the label had nixed earlier, considering the song too controversial for national television. Costello had planned on doing "Radio Radio" all along and when the controversy came up he figured he'd promise to do the other song, knowing full well that when he got on Live TV there nothing anyone could do to stop him playing what he wanted. It was a huge pre-planned F--- You to the "powers that be" (that got him banned from the show for a few years afterwards -- all is forgiven now and has been for years and he's been back on since).
The Costello situation has nothing whatsoever in common with the Simpson situation, where she had no earthly idea what she was doing and has no business singing live in the privacy of the shower of her own home, let alone lip-synching on national television.

Good Grief! It was a just a simple (but powerful) MISTAKE!
on live TV
it's amazing **** like that doesnt happen all the time!
it's the exposure of lypsyncing on a show with LIVE in the title that sucks
oh, and Miss Smarty Pants back there a few posts, in HAIRSPRAY, for instance (which is a FABULOUS show!!) the conductor/keyboard player hits the click button for the band to play all together on the heavy rhythmic numbers (since they are in different rooms). It is NOT always a sound man, musicians like to still be in control of that.
I was just watching TV, and had a nervous breakdown that I had used the names Ashlee Simpson and Jusy Garland in the same paragraph earlier to make a point. I can't believe I haven't been hunted down.
by the way, I like Ashlee Simpson's songs

Huh? Hairspray? What? Why are we don't talk about movies on a Broadway board. Are you a shill? Jesus, some people...::shaking head::

Posted: 10/25/04 at 12:01amI like her songs too...so she has to lipsynch them. You'd be surprised at how many of your favorite singers sound like crap live. The ones you think are great and amazing. Believe me.

from tomorrow's Variety:
NEW YORK -- Whoops, that wasn't part of a skit.
Viewers watching NBC's "Saturday Night Live" were treated to an unusual blunder this weekend when musical guest Ashlee Simpson began the wrong song. Realizing that something was amiss, the pop star danced a little jig and walked off the stage.
Simpson's band apparently cued up the wrong support track on her second song of the night, which they rehearsed Friday night. Good-spirited band members grinned widely and kept playing for several minutes sans Simpson.
At the end of show, guest host Jude LawJude Law -- with Simpson standing at his side -- explained that this was real, live television.
And, right on cue this time, Simpson offered her apologies. She also explained that she just danced a hoe-down as a reaction.

Posted: 10/25/04 at 12:16amI've never been fond of Ashley Simpson or lip-synching so I was very amused at last nights little flub. Schadenfreude at its best I suppose.

Posted: 10/25/04 at 12:18amAs I said on the SNL thread, I realized the days of live musical performances on that show had ended the first time I saw Jennifer Lopez there. Somehow, she was standing alone onstage, but I could hear three Jennifers singing...

"Miss Smarty Pants" - Ok. I'll take that. And stand corrected. In my experience, the audio guy has always cued the click. However, I've not yet been a part of a professional production such as "Hairspray", so if you feel I need further education on the subject, I'd be happy to join the cast of said show anytime
.
I still think it could have been handled better. I'm sure she thinks that too.

Posted: 10/25/04 at 8:34amyou know, which Madame lip-stink says one excuse, then her label says another, and neither come close to matching what was seen and heard, one has to wonder how DUMB people must think people are......

Posted: 10/25/04 at 9:06amI feel really bad for the kid. She is going to be the scapegoat for the many many others who do the same thing and haven't been "caught." And she's young and very inexperienced at live performance and ad-libbing in the face of disaster.

Posted: 10/25/04 at 9:08amhmmm, from what i read, the west coast saw an edited version of the show, so that it appeared what happened matched her apology...

Posted: 10/25/04 at 10:44amI agree she should have handled it better. I understand ****ake happens and everything, but she showed her age and lack of experience in what she did. It is a live performance and that is how she needed to treat it. I mean do I feel bad for her yea, but if I was getting paid what she does and being able to live out my dream like that…I would have done something other then just stand there, dance around, laugh and walk off stage. I mean WTF??? Are we honestly suppose to defend that. She messed up and like anyone else is just going to have to deal with the backlash of it. Stinks but that is life. Most of us, if not all have done theater and there is no other theatre then LIVE theatre. We all have been in that position. We all had to do something other then stand there clueless. Like I said stuff happens. I just think you cannot defend what she did. It was a human reaction, but if you’re a big exec and you have a big PowerPoint presentation going, the wrong slide come up and you do river dance and then walk out of the conference room…would you not expect repercussions. She needed to think on her feet and she didn’t. She now knows, it is a life lesson that she just had in front of 20 million people

"she's young and very inexperienced at live performance"
Then what is she doing on SNL?
I know a lot of experienced professional singers who would kill to get that gig.
I ask again, what is she doing on SNL?
Oh, that's right. She's riding on the coat-tails of her sister, who let's face it, is a better singer most pop stars nowadays.
Ashley Simpson is nothing more than a pretty face with a good publicist.
