I saw her perform on the RMA's. She opened with a joke saying, "Wait hold on is this the wrong song...ths is the wrong song...Just Kidding!" But I must admit she did sing live tonight and you could totally tell she was raspy as Laura Branigan on a bad day. Her performance on the RMA's taught me that Ashlee is guilty of:
1. Employing a **** vocal teacher/coach.
2. Not singing/supporting with her diaphram (she doesn't even breathe properly).
3. Not taking Pepcid AC enough to control the acid reflux.
4. Not being strong enough to say "NO!" to Daddy.
5. Failing square dancing in grade school.
She should have let out a huge belch into the mic at the end for s&g's.

Posted: 10/25/04 at 11:14pmI actually know very well-trained Broadway performers who can't sing when their reflux is acting up. Pepcid AC is for something much milder.

Just popping in to say that I heard Ashlee sing live on the RMAs, and I'll stick with her lipsyncing from now on.
Thanks.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 10:00amYes, I did watch tonights performance and you could tell that it was her sing. She wasn't good, but it wasnt awful either.(in retrospec to other singers) I mean you could tell Destinys Child did they whole voice guide thing because it sounded like the radio version. Also, I remember listening to Avril Lavigne and the 2004 Grammys and to be honest, she was a worse singer than Simpson. Faith Hill also performed at the Grammys the same year and she couldnt hit a note if she tried. Get off this poor Ashlee's back. Most "popular" singers today cannot sing live. I think it is horrible how all of you are bashing her. What would you have done if you lost your voice before a performance and needed to use a voice guide and then they play the wrong song and the "guide vocals" start playing. You guys would be scared sh*tless. I know she is not a supreme vocalist, but I enjoy listening to her music. I feel sorry for her because she is the one who gets caught doing this, but it was going to happen to someone. I love how everyone slams her for the SNL incident and the noone speaks of her performance last night. After all the controversy she went on that stage and sang to her ability. GET OFF HER BACK!

I think people here are less pissed at Simpson specifically than as a concept- the completely manufactured pop "star" who, talent-wise, probably shouldn't be there. The kind who becomes "popular" because of massive advertising pushes.
I think of these artists like most "blockbuster" summer movies. Sure, they sell the most tickets (albums, whatever). But that doesn't make them the best-liked. People see them and forget them in the space of a month. Is it any wonder few of them do much beyond their debut albums or opening weekends?

WHAT ability?!?
NOW The excuse is acid reflux. She has a different excuse everytime someone puts a camera in her face. THAT leads one to the conclusion that all of these excuses are BS and that she regularly lipsyncs. Regardless of how many times she has/had not lipsynced, she had NO CHOICE but to 'sing' live last night because she would be watched like a hawk the whole time.

Well, having seen her on the Today show this morning, I've decided to get off her back.
I agree that she does not sing properly, but name one person on the top 40 who does. (do they still call it the top forty?)
Speaking of singing live, remember the group who sang "It's so hard to say good bye" ? They were an African-Americian quartet who sang in tight harmony. I remember right when that song was at the top of it's popularity, they sang live on the Dick Clark New Years show and they SUCKED! I seem to remember thet kinda went away after that. If you can't remember it, you're probably too young because this was in the late eighties as I recall.

Actually, the acid reflux has been a problem for her for a long time. It's not a new "excuse" and it's a problem for many singers - well-trained and not.
I give her props for showing up last night at all.

Yeah, it's still called "Top Forty." Though when you listen it feels more like Top Fifteen or so.
Hey, can you tell I gave up on the radio in frustration years ago?

I could care less if everyone sings with a vocal track, or she has acid reflux...i think the whole thing is amazing in HOW she reacted. That is what made me in awe. I mean yea, stuff happens, but i thought she should have handled it better. You can say oh she is only 19, or whatever excuse you want to fill in the blank, BUT ultimately it just shows her lack of taking this seriously. I think multiple other performers would have thought fast and did SOMETHING. She just sat and waited for others to fix the problem for her but when you are on "live"...you really have to be responsible for yourself. (vocal track or no vocal track) Which she still is not taking responsibility by giving 101 excuses (and they are still coming in) and even blaming your band other then yourself…I have zero tolerance for stuff like that.
Last night I flipped it on (odd cause I only checked once and it was right at the beginning) I think she is an awful spastic performer. Was she singing…well yea I guess if that is what you call what she does (I personally think she has a better voice then she is creating with her weird way she wants to annunciate word but whatever) But I do not think we should all applaud her for getting up there and doing what she should be doing.

My sister-in-law used to bytch and complain about acid reflux while spending a fortune of my brother's money on Prilosec because the advertisement on the TV told her to.
Finally, some brillant doctor said to her "maybe if you stopped eating greasy, crappy food just before you go to bed you wouldn't have this problem."
She did and the acid reflux went away.
Personally, I don't have issues with that part of the digestive tract. Most of mine are at the other end.

Posted: 10/26/04 at 10:54amhahaha you have GOT to be kidding me. I actually HAD it happen. I went on with the performance, not many people noticed there was a big problem, cause I thought on my feet. I cried after i got off stage because I was so mad that I did not hear the cue but when i saw the playback....it really did not look that bad! I can not believe you have performed for 13 years and not lost a cue!!! Congrats!! I have been performing for 22 years and have had flub ups in that span. They happen…just a matter of how you handle them.

I didn't say I've never had a flub. :)
And acid reflux disease isn't quite the same thing as indigestion, is it? Becuase I get indigestion whenever I'm highly stressed, regardless of my diet. I was probably the only kid in middle school whose doctor said to get antacids...

Not really, acid reflux is when the acid in your stomach rises into your esophagus enflaming it. The longer it goes the worst damage you can do to it. Not a good or fun thing.
What I was saying Plum about the other thing is, she just should have thought on her feet instead of waiting for someone to fix it. Do I feel for her and how horrified she must have been..GOD YES!!! It is the worst feeling in the world. I think she should have tried.

This is like a HUGE blame game!!
Ashlee Simpson Pokes Fun At Self After Lip-Synch Debacle
When Ashlee Simpson's band started playing at Monday night's "Radio Music Awards" she screamed, "It's the wrong song!" Seconds later, she told the crowd: "Only kidding."
She went on to perform her song "Autobiography" which host Carson Daly reassured the audience was "Live, yes live."
Simpson was poking fun at her disaster a couple of nights earlier on "Saturday Night Live." That's when her lip-synch secret was exposed.
As Simpson and her band began their second song Saturday, the sound of a pre-recorded vocal could be heard -- to the song that she'd already done earlier in the show. Simpson stopped, and paused, and then tried a few exaggerated dance steps, before leaving the stage. She later blamed her band for playing "the wrong song."
Earlier Monday, Simpson's father, who's also her manager, told Ryan Seacrest his daughter used the extra help from a voice track because acid reflux disease had made her voice hoarse.
He said she's never done that before. And, Joe Simpson said since the Radio Music Awards were in Las Vegas, they went with the advice of Wayne Newton's doctor and she got a cortisone shot before Monday night's awards.
Her dad said he doesn't get what all the fuss is about. He told New York and Los Angeles radio stations KIIS-FM, Z100 that "every artist" has had "vocal problems at some time, from Celine Dion on down. So you've got to do what you've got to do."
He said Ashlee's voice was hoarse and "Just like any artist in America, she has a backing track that she pushes so you don't have to hear her croak through a song on national television."
Ashlee said to blame her dad. She said that when her acid reflux started acting up he insisted she take it easy by using a backing track. She said she wasn't happy with the decision and emphasized that it's not something she normally relies upon. She said she was so upset because she's never used one before. But she felt she had little choice, saying her voice was so weak, she "couldn't even speak."
She told MTV's "Total Request Live" "The whole situation was a bummer." She also said, "It's so embarrassing," and that she made a complete fool of herself. But she said she and her band didn't know what to do when everything fell apart. She said they all "went into a state of shock."
'SNL' Creator Sticks Up For Ashlee
Tina Fey said the whole "SNL" cast felt bad for what was happening to Ashlee. She said she was in the control booth and they all ran and hid and were like "I can't look. I can't look."
She said it was definitely like an actor's stress dream.
"SNL" creator Lorne Michaels said Simpson was mortified and in her dressing room, but producer Marci Klein got her to come out for good nights and explained that "it wasn't the end of the world. It wasn't her fault."
Fans Speak Out
If Ashlee Simpson's looking for a pick-me-up, a look at her Web site probably won't help. There are some words of support from fans, but not everyone's willing to let Saturday's 'SNL" gaffe pass.
One fan wrote he hoped her humiliation would be long lived. Another told her to go away and suggested she pose for Playboy, saying "If you wanna be famous for something, choose something you can actually do."
But other fans leaped to her defense, with one posting that said "Mistakes happen." And other fan wrote "You're probably all just jealous because you sit at home and wish you were a celebrity."
Another wasn't as kind, saying, "You can now stick a fork in her singing career -- it's completely done!"
Fingerpointing
The finger-pointing in the aftermath's of Ashlee's embarrassing "SNL" gig is falling on her drummer. Simpson's dad said it was the band's drummer who pushed the wrong button onstage.
But he said there's no worry about the guy getting booted from the band. He said he's a young kid, who just made a mistake.
He also blamed Ashlee’s acid reflux for the problem.
Her record label earlier insisted that Simpson wasn't lip-synching, saying the track was supposed to have been some pre-taped electronic percussion.
Lorne Michaels insists that Ashlee wasn't lip-synching during the program over the weekend -- even though the embarrassing mix-up made it seem that way.
Michaels said he feels "terrible" for Simpson. He tells Associated Press Network News that Simpson was singing live -- and that the tape was providing backing vocals for harmony, which he says "people do."
Michaels said Simpson was "mortified."
At the end of the show, guest host Jude Law appeared and tried to explain the pre-recorded song. "What can I say?" Law said with Simpson by his side. "Live TV." "Exactly. I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down," Simpson said.
Phone Number For Sale
Ashlee Simpson just can't get a break.
First the people who were supposed to be rolling her backing tracks got the wrong number. Then it got worse for Ashlee -- when some people on the Internet got the right number -- for her personal cell phone.
For a time Monday, someone on eBay was auctioning off her private cell number. The listing said the number was inadvertently, and briefly, posted on her Web site.
