The studio is submitting in the musical/comedy category.
Several that walk a fine line between comedy and drama but are being submitted as comedies include “The Wolf of Wall Street,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” “Before Midnight,” “Inside Llewyn Davis,” “Her” and “August: Osage County.” Others with a mix of laughs and tears submitted as dramas include “Blue Jasmine” and “Saving Mr. Banks.”

Posted: 11/27/13 at 3:42pmI imagine INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS is being submitted as a musical, not a comedy, it's still strange that the Globes still group them together. I'm not surprised about AUGUST: OC, especially with the new ending and that preview they put out; I guess the play had some really funny moments, but the overall tone was very dramatic and intense. It's also weird to see HER submitted as a comedy, again, it has some very funny moments, but it's no romantic comedy.

The Globe categorization is all over the place. Wolf of Wall Street is in as a Comedy but apparently Saving Mr. Banks is not.
I have absolutely no problem with Blue Jasmine submitted as drama though. There are some broad characters in it, sure, but the whole movie is chronicling a woman having a breakdown.
Before Midnight is a tough one because the most dramatic moment is encapsulated in 15-20 minute hotel scene. Other than that, it is in keeping with the other movies that are romantic comedies.
Harvey is going to spread out all of his movies, so pushing A: OC there is no shock.

Posted: 11/27/13 at 5:50pmThe film is placed in Musical/Comedy because it is backed by the awards-hungry Weinstein's, and they won't have to compete with "Gravity" or "12 Years a Slave" in the Drama category.

I know, I was referencing strummer's post regarding the Globes' odd categorization.

the play sucked, the movie sucked, Julia sucked, Meryl sucked
this whole thing is an embarrassment

^ Ok.
Anyway, I'm most surprised that they decided to submit BLUE JASMINE as a drama and not a comedy. Not sure which category I'd rather it be in, but you'd think they'd want to have it be categorized as a comedy, where the competition is usually weaker.

Blue Jasmine's priority is Blanchett.

I agree with that, but I also think the overall tone and "plot" is somber and a lot darker than the previous two films.
I was left thinking Before Midnight was a "drama" a lot more than a "comedy." The whole thing felt like prelude to a divorce. Even the "jokey" moments.

Exactly. And they think she has a better chance being pitted against Sandra Bullock? The Globes love awarding big stars like Bullock. I guess Emma Thompson just won the musical/comedy Golden Globe for SAVING MR. BANKS.

WickedRocks, I believe the link says SAVING MR. BANKS is a drama. I think BLUE JASMINE treads the line between comedy/drama, there were some genuinely hilarious moments and part of what makes Blanchett's performance so stunning and remarkable is that she understands what makes her character funny. ***BLUE JASMINE SPOILER*** Still, the last shot is intensely dramatic, but I think it could have been submitted as a comedy just as easily****END OF BLUE JASMINE SPOILER***
I really think Blanchett is going to sweep regardless of what category she is in. Yes, the Globes love a big star but they also love to predict the Oscars. It'll be interesting to see who wins between Blanchett and Bullock for sure.

Wow, really? So then I guess Meryl wins by default?
At least this hopefully means well-deserved nominations for ENOUGH SAID for Best Actress and Best Picture (Musical/Comedy).

Looks like the HFPA overruled Sony's submission of AMERICAN HUSTLE as a drama; it's now competing as a comedy at the Globes.

That's strange that HFPA overruled. From what I've heard, it is fun but people also noted that the arcs for many of the characters, particularly Amy Adams is in fact very dramatic. Then again almost all of DOR's movies could pass as comedies. Even Three Kings and The Fighter can be super funny.
I think Blanchett is winning regardless of categorization at the Globes. Let's remember that Woody is winning the DeMille Award that night. It is reasonable to assume his movie he has there will also have a good showing.
And I didn't want to say it but HFPA has almost ignored the Coen Brothers. Atonement, rather notoriously, beat it in drama when it virtually swept the awards season with No Country for Old Men. A Serious Man got ignored, The Man Who Wasn't There got ignored, as did True Grit (to contextualize that snub, Ides of March got in to the Best Picture-Drama category). And let's go to when their movies were in Comedy/Musical. Evita (and Madonna) beat Fargo and Frances McDormand. O Brother Where Art Thou and Burn After Reading did get put in there for Best Picture- Comedy/Musical but both seemed like filler nominations. Only 2 actors from Coen films have won, one was undeniable in Bardem and the other seemed to be a win because of star power, Clooney. Inside Llewyn Davis has left some people cold so regardless of categorization, I think it will at most get a Song nomination (though its eligibility on some songs are getting questionable).

Posted: 11/29/13 at 5:08pmStrummergirl, you are right re the Globes and the Coens, they just don't like them. It's a shame since INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS is a great entry from them and Oscar Isaac is giving one of the best performances of the year (along with the brilliant Carey Mulligan).

I think Blanchett is winning regardless of categorization at the Globes. Let's remember that Woody is winning the DeMille Award that night. It is reasonable to assume his movie he has there will also have a good showing.
But Woody stated this week that he won't attend. He's notorious for not showing up to awards shows and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association knows this, but it's different this time because he's supposed to be receiving an award specifically for him and not just simply being 'nominated with a chance'. Thus, I'm sure they were expecting/hoping that he would turn up. I can see HFPA taking offense and NOT awarding Blue Jasmine anything for this perceived slight. (They can be such bitchy queens, I swear.) Plus, they're such star-fvckers, and Bullock was recently named "the world's biggest movie star."
Furthermore, Woody has shown up to the Oscars at least once, and that was to honor NYC, a city near and dear to his heart. But at least he was there. He won't even show up to his own honorary segment at the GGs.
