How old do you think the average gay man is when he finds his life partner? How about the average lesbian?
The news today mentioned a study that says the best time to get married and be happy in your marriage is between the ages of 23 and 27. Do you think that holds true for GLBT folks?

Posted: 11/18/05 at 11:40amIt may start changing in the future- it seems that kids are coming out earlier and earlier. But as of now, if i were pressed to guess an age, I'd say not until late 30s into 40s. That's just my guess, though.

Posted: 11/18/05 at 11:41amAnyway, how on earth does a 23 year old know what he/she wants, enough to get married? That's WAY too young, gay or straight.

Posted: 11/18/05 at 11:42amCheno, my best friend was that age when she got married - almost 25 years ago - and she and her husband are the happiest couple I know.

Really? Interesting.
Speaking for myself, I was completely lost at 23. However, I'd be ready for marriage today if I found the right person, at age 30.

Posted: 11/18/05 at 11:46amDepending on the timing of the onset of the coming-out process, many gay people, especially men, experience a second adolescence. This can delay that 23-27 period for anywhere from 3-5 to 10-15 years, depending on the strength of their need for nesting.

Well, as someone who went to a private Christian high school and university, I should mention that almost all of my friends married between the ages of 21 and 25. And they are all happily married. Except for my best friend, who married a gay man...despite my protest.
Then again, the motto on our college campus was "ring by spring or your money back."

Show-off!
I got into a long term relationship when I was 24. It lasted 11 years. Looking back, I so wasn't ready for that. I'm 37 now (almost 38 ), and not sure I'm ready for it YET myself.

Two of my best friends got married last year at 30 and 38, so I guess there's hope for some after 27.

Posted: 11/18/05 at 1:59pmLook, people have been getting married, often happily, in their early twenties for years. Some people probably shouldn't be driving a car, let alone starting a family, at age 22, but I think generalizing about it isn't very useful.

I locked into an LTR when I was 21, about a year after I came out (for the final time). We made it three years, only about one of those actually living together.
Since then, I haven't lasted more than two months with anyone. Most of the time they ended by my choice. I'm like Jerry Seinfeld -- I see a guy eating his peas one at a time and use that as a reason to call it off.
I'm now 27, so I guess I become one of the untouchables next year. Should I break out the Carpenters albums now to save time?

My mom was 21 and my dad 17 when they got married.
They celebrate their 50th Anniversary in June.

One cannot generalize human interaction...my mother was married to my stepfather when she was 22, and they're celebrating 21 years next month. I've been out since very early adolescence, and had the typical teenage dating experience, befitting of my white trash roots (super-serious at sixteen, that sort of thing), and have been in one long-term (2+ years) cohabitative relationship, and in retrospect, it was a HORRIBLE idea, but I'm SURE that somewhere there is a 22 year old who is perfectly ready, and that there is a 42 year old who will *never* be ready.
You can't put an "average age" on ANYBODY'S marriage, not just gays. Human relationships are human relationships, no matter who's in them, and the variables are too great to make any kind of sweeping pronouncement.
