Vivian Blaine was a VERY well known performer on stage and film in the 1940s and 1950s.

Miss Adelaide (the character Blaine played in GUYS AND DOLLS) was changed from a stripper to a "showgirl" to make her more sympathetic.

Gertrude Lawrence, the original Anna of THE KING AND I, had marvelous stage presence but also hit a flat note when she sang fairly regularly.

A musical version of PYGMALION was turned down by EVERY major composer and lyricist--thought that George Bernard Shaw's play was a classic on its own and didn't need music.

Even Lerner & Loewe (who eventualy wrote MY FAIR LADY) initially felt that way and only reconsidered when they realized all they had to do was add the plot that initially happened "off-stage."

Moss Hart (MY FAIR LADY Director) felt at first that Julie Andrews could not handle role of Eliza Doolittle and came very close to asking her to "step down" from role. It was only after five straight days of working with her one-on-one that he saw she COULD perform role.

Rex Harrison was a fanatical devotee of George Bernard Shaw and his work. (Shaw wrote PYGMALION, source for MY FAIR LADY.)

Hammerstein was so ill he never saw an official performance of THE SOUND OF MUSIC.

I personally think The SOund of Music is the best film musical, not Singing in the Rain like everyone else seems to.
Julie Andrews makes we weep she's so perfect in it.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC had an longer original stage run in London that it did in New York.

That's Gertrude Lawrence as Anna in THE KING AND I under the credits--she passed away due to cancer while she was playing role.

STRIKE UP THE BAND contains a lot of 1930s topical humor and might seem dated today.

B.B.,

I don't remember at what point in the show we were at when you wrote this--what show did you think Cagney was the star of?

I hate it when they update classic musicals, too. So maybe no revival re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II
I just love the title song of the show.

It was Of Thee I Sing. Was there a movie version? Or was I just smokin crack on him being in the show?

You are CORRECT, B.B., Gene Kelley did star in the original production of PAL JOEY.

David Selznick saw his performance and signed him to a film contract.

Well, no Cagney in OFF THEE I SING.

But Carroll O'Connor once starred in a TV Version during the 1970s! :)

Hm. Well, thanks Mary, I'll have to look into why I thought that. Maybe I should put this pipe down...
