re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Because Julie Andrews wasn't a HOLLYWOOD name--only known to then limited theatergoing public. So, they cast major Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn as Eliza.

Andrews showed them when Disney signed her for MARY POPPINS and she won the Oscar for her film debut! :)

ME says: " Cole Porter was what they called in the 1930s "a lifetime bachelor."

ME, I'm surprised at you. The 1930 had many other names for what Cole had with his wife, including the term the show tonight used, "white marriage," which I had never heard. But he was a married man who had deep, intense sexual and romantic relationships with men, most of which his wife knew about, but several of which tore at the fabric of their loving but sexless "marriage of convenience."

See the William O'Brien biography for the real story--and the Cary Grant and Kevin Kline movies for silly fiction.

And BB--no, James Cagney did not appear in "Of Thee I Sing"

Hey Pal Joey,

Thanks re: The O'Brien biography of Porter. I'll have to check it out!

P.S. "Lifetime Bachelor" is a term I borrowed from a theater historian--forget which one. But no matter!--I'll read O'Brien's Book. Thanks for the info!

(I still think "white marriage" makes it sound like they were both caucasian.) :)

I was thinking of Yankee Doodle Dandy. re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II
The cover art just reminds me of Of Thee I Sing.
Word. Word, indeed.

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Have you ever heard someone actually SING "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" instead of yell and bluster their way through it. It's actually quite a beautiful song!

i liked tonight's episode but i can seriously only take julie andrews in spurts. she's not one of my favorites, i'm not a big fan of "the sound of music" (or as we called it at my house: "the sound of mucus")

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

I had a tear rolling down my face as they closed part 4 playing Eidelweis and the announcement of Oscar Hammerstein dying. I have actually stayed at the house where he died in Doylestown (it was a B&B). Man, I'm a big mush!

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Eidelweis is my favorite song from "The Sound of Music"
"All I ask of you is one thing: please don't be cynical. I hate cynicism -- it's my least favorite quality and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen." Conan O'Brien

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

that last post was a joke. i actually have a great respect and admiration for julie andrews. "sound of music" was actually a "guilty pleasure" when i was growing up. and "edelweiss" is a beautiful song.

Yes, Marquise, but what EXACTLY is a "blossom of snow"?

Is it referring to a storm that snows flowers?

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Cagney confusion: George M. Cohan played FDR in the Rodgers & Hart musical I'D RATHER BE RIGHT. Cagney played Cohan in the movie YANKEE DOODLE DANDY, in which a number from I'D RATHER BE RIGHT was recreated. Maybe you saw a clip of Cagney as a singing and dancing president and thought it was OF THEE I SING.

Of course, it never made sense that Cohan danced as FDR, but that's Broadway!

By the way, did anyone mention that the tall red haird guy dancing with June Havoc in the Pal Joey clips was Van Johnson?

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

One possible correction.

I believe the Anna in the credits was Patricia Morrison, not Gertrude Lawrence

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Well, I'm pretty sure it was our Gertie...

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Thanks for the followup post, Marquise. I gasped at the first one. Julie Andrews may have been a pain to work with in her later years, but she can do no wrong in my book! re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Gertrude was shown singing with Rodgers and Hammerstein.

I'm pretty sure it was Ms. Morrison cause I remarked to my boyfriend, 'Why are they showing Patricia Morrison in the role?'

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Is anyone else finding the doc rather boring and obvious? I'll watch part III, but I just feel the whole thing could have been better.
"Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It's a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” ~ Muhammad Ali

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

I'm enjoying it...but I feel it's a little rushed. Of course I would love for it to be 12 hours long and go into every bit of detail from every major hit (and flop) from the past century.

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Anna in the credits just sounded so much better vocally that I questioned whether it was Gertie or not...

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Loving it, borstal! Funny, when you take Theatre History in college, they don't talk about ANY of this stuff. Maybe I'm just a theatre nerd....yeah, that's probably it. re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

Well if you seriously did not know, Edelweiss is the actual the national flower of Austria if I remember right. It is a white flower hence the name "blossom of snow" it is found in the mountains so the snow reference could come from there too.
My avatar is a reminder to myself. I need lots of reminders...

Patricia Morison was one of the replacement Annas during THE KING AND I's original run.

re: BROADWAY: The American Musical - Part II

okay some people can't take a joke and i was bombarded with insults, death threats, etc. for my little "joke" about dame julie andrews. all this even after i posted a re-traction. as a show of solidarity and good faith for everything that is pure and holy (including austrian nuns) i am hereby wearing an avatar of miss Julie frolicking atop the hills that are so alive with that which we call "the sound of music".

P.S. But it ain't staying up for very long so take a good long hard look and bask in it's image.
