I'm DEFINITELY doing When You Say Nothing At All- alison krauss's song.
Sigh, I guess I am just getting old. It's a Keith Whitley song that was redone by Alison Krauss. Written by Paul Overstreet & Don Schlitz. (Had to look that last part up.) Keith died too young and seems like people just forgot him. Not that I expect you damn yankees to know a thing about that.

Posted: 1/26/06 at 1:16amYeah so I read a few pages back and I would like to speak my peace. I don't necessarily think one should be able to sing LIKE country singer. It should just be a country song. I find it best when a singer has an identity. I find it more versatile if a singer can take a country song and make it their own rather than put on a southern drawl and yodel. If I riff in a country song, it is stil a song that is in the country genre, but in a different style. I can sing "Being Alive" in a jazz style and it would still be a musical theater song, just sung in a jazz style. People can interpret things the way they want, but that's how I see it and how I'll probably sing it.

I don't agree with you on that Ebby--the themes in AI and consequently BWW I are about seeing the singer bend themself into the different styles--not the singer bend the song to fit their style.
But, we all gotta do what we gotta do, and I look forward to hearing everyone next week!

I agree with Jerby. The point of Idol isn't to showcase your one biggest strength, be it riffing or belting or vibrato, etc., but to show your versatility and ability to perform any genre. Which isn't to say you can't riff in a country song, but you can't, say, do a country song with a rocker's edge because then you're not doing justice to the country style. We can't do "Seven Spanish Angels" in R&B and say, well it could be a country song, but I'm 'making it my own'. Making something your own doesn't mean you only have one style and do make it your trademark and repeat it for all your songs - it means you make it different than the people who made the song famous.
And jrb_actor, I'm dying to hear you do Tuesday's Gone. Pretty please?

Yep, if you sing a "country song" in a "pop" style, you are singing a "pop" song. This is about singing a country song, this week.
Diva, you should do "Crazy," first of all it is actually a great song, and most importantly it is SO different.
The entire point of having themes is to show your range. And (now I shall go on record contradicting myself) maybe there should not even be a "Broadway" option.

Posted: 1/26/06 at 1:36amOK intejecting my 2 cents.. This is country, not pop. we already did pop that was last week.. We are talking BArbara Mandrell, Dolly Parton, George Strait, Willy Nelson, Patsy Cline..

Posted: 1/26/06 at 1:40amWe're saying if it's more pop than country, it's an automatic -3 points. And then you'd better sing your non-country song PERFECTLY or else you're more or less out of hte running if your judges' score is <21/30.
