Bagel Eaters

I have a question for people who eat bagels. Do you toast your bagel?

I maintain that the point of a bagel is the hard exterior and the spongy interior. Toasting it ruins the spongy interior and bagels shouldn't be toasted.

What say you?

It depends on the bagel... But I always prefer toasted. Especially if I'm eating with chilled cream cheese. That's the best.

I love a warm bagel and cold cream cheese, or just melted butter. When I walk by the bagel stores on my way to work, if I am lucky enough to pass when a new batch come out of the oven I will get one of those. If they have already cooled, I will have them toast it for me.

I believe it is possible to toast a bagel so that most of the interior remains spongy. You have to do it on a light setting. This gives the bagel enough heat so that it can melt your butter a little.

However, you can lose track of it if you are using a toaster oven and off fixing your hair or straining your juice and then over-toast, which can give the entire bagel a sort of crouton consistency. Not desirable.

Fresh bagels - do not toast.

out of the freezer-toast

Namo - if you take an unsliced bagel, and bake at 300 f instead of toasting, you will get a scrumptious crispy outside and soft inside.

I like them toasted only with cream cheese and jelly.

If I am making a sandwich, I prefer the bagel a little warm. Otherwise, I don't toast them if I just have butter.

Places that suggest you toast your bagel are selling you stale bagels. A bagel should be warm- from the oven.

I toast my bagels. Like Namo said, you just keep the toaster on a light setting.

toasting doesn't compare with a nice fresh bagel.

Jane you are so right! When I see they are pulling them out of the oven, it is like I won the lottery!

I microwave my bagels. Fresh from the oven is always best, but when I have leftover bagels at home, I put one (unsliced) in the microwave for 30 seconds. I also don't own a toaster. And I hate melted cream cheese.

ahhrealmonsters, melted cream cheese was always why I didn't like bagels fresh out of the oven. The cream cheese would melt down the sides of the bagel.

glad you agree, SNAFU!

I found that microwaving any kind of bread turns it totally rubbery. ew.

lightly toasted with butter first to melt and absorb the heat a little so the cream cheese won't melt when I put it on top of the butter...finished with a sprinkle of sea salt!

Goth, that is why you don't put the cream cheese ON the bagel (for fear of melting). Instead, you dip the bagel into the cream cheese - assuming it's in a small cup or bowl of some sort. I almost always ask for mine "on the side" to accomplish this. It may sound strange to do that, but it is how you avoid that melted cream cheese which I also detest.

A bagel, lightly toasted with butter is one of my favorite things in the world.

I dip my cream cheese, too! So little melt, so much yum.

Here's a question - who here has had a flagel? they are the very large, very flattened out bagels.

I love them!

I agree with Joe, Jane and Snaf. Anyway, not to be a NY snob or anything, but there are hardly any bagels made today that even come close to the "real" bagels of the prior decades. I think anyone who desires an authentic back to the past bagel (Jewish style), with old décor and everything, must trek up to BARNEY GRENNGRASS, at 89th st and Amsterdam. I mourn the loss of not living around the corner from this place anymore...Perfect bagel with cream cheese, highest quality lox, and raw onion. Nothing could be better, except their scrambled eggs, onions and lox!! Oh, Janey!!!
