Bagel Eaters

I do like a nice Cinnamon Raisen bagel with cream cheese every now and then.

I love a raisin bagel! Just have to be in the mood for a little sweet instead of savory.

You guys who are so in the mood for a bagel - don't you keep any in the freezer? buy some and freeze them whole. Then when you want one, bake it at about 300 degrees until crisp on the outside. I swear you'll love it!

Raisin bagel only good hot with butter....yum. A cold one is not yummy at all.

Panera makes a bagel called french toast, it's more like a muffin and I will only have a taste of it.

My nephew goes to Panera almost every morning for a cinnamon crunch bagel with blueberry cream cheese.... Barf. Couldn't do it.

I think the young ones don't realize that they are not real bagels. My 20 year old son gets his bagels from his school cafeteria...blarf

A bagel with sugar (even cinnamon) or fruit (not even raisins!) is NOT a bagel.

It is a bagel-shaped muffin food. It's a roll-with-a-hole. BUT IT IS NOT A BAGEL.

The whole concept of a bagel encompasses only savory flavors.

This is how bagels are made. I had this job my junior and senior years in high school:

Bagels are boiled to give them a hard crust (but soft inside!) and maintain the integrity of the holes:

Then fished out of the water and put on pine planks:

Then they are seasoned with salt/onion/sesame/poppy and baked :

I took a one day course in bagel making. I tried it at home and did pretty well.

The bagel store on my corner refuses to toast bagels.

I go for an Everything with plain cream cheese. Sun-dried tomato on a fancy day.

Anyone have a shop that makes what you believe to be a top-notch bagel? I love Ess-a-Bagel over on 52nd and 3rd, but it's just nowhere near home.

I don't know where you live, but in my neighborhood, the best is Bagel Bob's, at university betw. 9th and 10th.

I'm a Brooklyn Jew and actually don't mind Dunkin Donuts bagels if you toast it and scoop out a little of the doughy insides.

There is a Bagel shop here in Dumbo on Front Street that is awesome! They have a high turnover and make fresh ones every three hours. There is also one on Montague Street that starts making them at 2 AM for those late night cravings.

My aunt makes her own bagels for break fast on/after Yom Kippur and for Christmas (she's Christian).

There's a fantastic place near my grandparents in Springfield, NJ that makes the most phenomenal bagels. Putting butter, cream cheese, or even slicing them seems like a travesty to me. I've found some fine bagels in DC, but have yet to have a bagel as fantastic as in Jersey.

Plain, salt, or egg all with butter (healthy, I know). For sweet, a cinnamon raisin with butter or cream cheese.

@Jane - I'm on the UWS - it's a food black hole in many ways, bagels included.

Bagel Bob's is good. Ess-a-Bagel is good. Tal Bagels are good. The Bagel Hole in Brooklyn is good.

Nothing compares to H&H, may it rest in peace and may its name be for a blessing.

Dunkin Donuts bagels if you toast it and scoop out a little of the doughy insides.

If you have to toast it and scoop it? A bagel it's NOT.

It's a muffin.

The only decent bagel I've found on the UWS is Absolute on 108th and Broadway.

Absolutely.

I like the bagels at Hudson Bagels, on Hudson Street right off Chistopher. Their sesame bagels offer a plentiful amount of seeds, and they're very good.

Now here's a follow up for everyone...

Thoughts on using bagels for sandwiches? I have done it on occasion, for lunch, but I'm always left feeling disappointed in the end.
#99

Bagel Eaters

I do it on occasion. But the result is never as good as the idea was in my head.

I think bagels are too chewy and substantial on their own. You have to bite down too hard and it squeezes everything out the sides, and then there's the hole...
I feel the same about big crunchy hunks of french bread for sandwiches. It's too much! I need a bread that gives easily and supports, not barricades the contents.
Art has a double face, of expression and illusion.

Bagel Eaters

A bagel isn't good for sandwiches because the main attraction will be the bagel itself.
