Tiny, there is that place (I don't remember the name) on Houston East of 2nd Ave that specialize in Bagels and Bialies. A family owned business that has been there forever!

Is the flattened bagel like the "skinny girl" bagel? You know, the one where they ask for bread to be scooped out of the bagel so it's just the outer part? So ridiculous and, apparently, very popular right now.

No, for the flagel, just picture a regular bagel ran over by a sherman tank. It gets so flat you can barely slice it.

I don't like "Sweet" bagels: Raisin, banana walnut and the like. I like seeded bagels, onion and or garlic and egg bagels.

my favs - well, I have to say pumpernickel first because of my diabetes, but that's not my favorite. I like everything bagels, sesame seed and occasionally I feel like a raisin bagel.

Egg bagels have been my bagel of choice since I was a kid.

My parents ran a catering company, and would go to this bagel shop the morning of Kiddish luncheons or shiva or whatever and pick up bags and bags of fresh-from-the-oven bagels. God, the car smelled like heaven.

I think more modern bagel varieties like strawberry are an affront to bagelery.

I agree that I don't go for the sweet ones either. My favorites are everything or sesame seed. I also like onion sometimes too.

everything then onion then sesame. A nice salted egg bagel is good now and then. Also not a fan of the sweet ones.

I have a gourmet garage on my corner. That's where I usually buy my bagels. However, I noticed that by the time I go in there, which is usually mid morning, there are hardly any bagels of any kind left. You know why? Restaurants and other stores are driving up, hopping out of their trucks, and buying all the bagels out. i saw one guy leaving the store with a bag the size of a city trash can full of bagels.

I don't think that's fair. Get your goddamn bagels from your supplier and leave some for the consumer!! grrr.

It's not uncommon. It's what my parents did. They're a far better product than the stuff that would come from a food purveyor.

Everything bagels are the best. What about cream cheese? What is everyone's favorite? I cannot do anything except the good old fashioned PLAIN. But my husband loves blueberry and strawberry. Yuck!!!

I can remember the first bagels in my life. My father loved them and would go out for them. Now I'm going back more than fifty years. The bagels were small and hard. And they only came in plain.

The bagels I can't tolerate are those which are big,light and fluffy. And also supermarket bagels that are in the freezer section.

Headband, totally agree. Plain is where it is at! Scallion is the acceptable other option, and vegetable can be okay.

But fruity cream cheeses, or lox cream cheese, or whatever- no way.

Any bagels pre-packaged at the supermarket are gross, in my opinion.

I actually hate cream cheese. It's the flavor and consistency that I don't like. I won't even eat cheese cake.

Jane - avoid Dunkin Donuts bagels like the plague, then! What you are describing matches their bagel perfectly. Yuck. Not a fan.

I was weaned on bagels. I'll wholeheartedly agree with Jane: I only toast a bagel when it has come out of the freezer.

Favorite kind? Everything, Onion, Egg.

Total Dislike of sweet bagels as well as sweet cream cheeses.

Thank you, Jane for the name of Yonah Schimmel's knishes place! I'd been trying to think of that since it came up in the first new york visit thread! LOVE that place.

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
