Maybe now there will be some pressure on the Cubs owners and management to actually try to win. For decades, they've thrived on the "lovable losers" image. Cubs fans don't care if the team sucks - they have such a quaint little ball park in a trendy neighborhood. Tourists come to Wrigley to see the nice ivy covered walls.

On the other hand, we South Siders actually really care about winning.

Hey Cubs fans - stop blaming a stupid goat. Stop blaming Steve Bartman. Stop whining!

Though I am a Yankee Fan, I am happy for my friend, the White Sox Fan. But I have to say that I think this was a very poorly attended World Series as far as the TV ratings. No one seemed to care much outside Texas and Chicago.

It is sad that the national teams don't get as much attention as the big franchises. Baseball is still an exciting game, whether it is played in a sandlot, at Yankee Stadium or at Fenway or Wrigley Field

True enough, SamIAm. Anyway, I feel smart because I called the White Sox as champions a while back on this thread.

ETA- August 10th! Okay, so that's not amazing, but it's still pretty good considering how close all the races were.

So...BWAA awards? The rookie awards were fine, but the Cy Young choices in both leagues were just awful. Clemens was screwed, but Santana was completely screwed, jobbed, and ripped off. Then the writers pointed their fingers and laughed. Bloody morons.

And the AL MVP award, though rightly awarded, shouldn't even have been as close as it was. "Clutchness" does not make up for superior offensive numbers and the fact that- oh yeah! A-Rod is the one that actually plays defense! Ortiz was only playing half the game.

I'm pretty sure Mike Celizic took the opposite stance on all these issues. I'll use him as my Barometer of Stupid from now on, as in, if you agree with him, there's a good chance you're being stupid.

There is no excuse for Bartolo taking the AL Cy.
I at least understand the reasoning for the Clemens not taking the NL Cy, as wrong as it may be.
(Our friend may say this due to lack of reading comprehension on my part, I say the BWAA has the same convoluted logic he uses.)

Howard was not my choice for NL Rookie, but none of the choices were great.

Pujols had better take the NL MVP, Andruw may play for my team, but he does not deserve it.

Actually, I'm all for Derrick Lee as the NL MVP, but I doubt anyone remembers he exists.

And see, here's what bugs me about Carpenter winning. If you're going to go with the winningest pitcher, why not go for Dontrelle Willis? Willis wasn't exactly a crappy pitcher behind all those wins. He was definitely one of the elite 4 in the league. Basically they just rewarded Carpenter for being on the best team in the NL, screw the fact that he probably slacked off in September since they already had the pennant.

Lee won't win, has no chance. Unfortunately, the "team is bad" thing will take over completely. I always wondered exactly how a first baseman can make the pitching not be terrible.

I agree, thinking logically it was "harder" for Dontrelle to win in Florida than for Carpenter to win in St Louis. The total lack of run support for Clemens, I just don't see how that doesn't factor.

I hate it when they give the awards to someone based on name, read Bonds, but Clemens is far more than a name, he was far and away the toughest pitcher to face in the league.

Lee deserves it, but Pujols will win without a doubt. What a nice baseball treat on a Monday.
