OK, I'm finally giving in to peer pressure and starting my own blog. Hopefully it'll be a good outlet for my creativity and senseless rambling.
What's a good blogging host? Livejournal? Blogger? Something that supports pictures would be nice.

I like Blogger. It's not as user friendly off the bat like something like Livejournal, but I find Blogger more aesthetically pleasing.
I'm an avid blogspot blogger.
And I never noticed that Ang is wearing a Flames hat in your avatar...GO FLAMES...he has good taste. :P

I think LiveJournal is more social than Blogger- it's easy to join communities, friend and be friended, etc. And both of them look fine if you do a little customization, and even nicer if you pay to customize everything. :)
Anyway, I use LiveJournal and Movable Type. I also have a Xanga for commenting on other Xangas, but I wouldn't recommend it otherwise.
Does EVERYONE have a blog?
Oh, and I'm calling mine "The Rambling Corner" -- not terribly innovative, but I like it. Thoughts?
I like my Xanga, but I mainly got it because all my other friends had Xangas. But now that everyone left in favor of Facebook, I still like it.

I love livejournal, but I think it's just because I'm a creature of habit. I've been on LJ since 2001... I tried xanga for a little while and didnt like it nearly as much. I find I can do so much more with my livejournal and more of my friends are on it.

I've been keeping a blog for 3 years now- I wasn't exactly a pioneer, but it's been a while. Anyway, you can always change the name of your blog. I know someone who does it practically every week. I really like her latest name; it's a Good Omens reference.
You can get a free - and very easy to use blog right here at BroadwayWorld.com

Aww, thanks Craig. But I already created a blog right before you posted and reminded me of BWW's other wonderful services.

I had journalspace for a while, and then deleted my blog after a while. I only had three friends there...but I actually had readers, so that's cool. I also took part in a writing contest they had there...I didn't win, but I liked taking part in it.
But journalspace is really good.

Be careful what you all write in your blogs especially if you are looking for a job.
Most hiring influences these days are now accessing your blogs (and your friends blogs) to find out what kind of a person you are.
I follow my Mother's creed:
NEVER put anything in writing.

Di2, who's giving you this information? Because that's one of the most absurd things Ive ever heard....
Especially considering no employer or potential empolyer asks if you keep a journal -- and if you do, what the URL is. Frankly, they CAN'T ask you that. However, you can be asked to sign a confidentiality agreement depending on the company you work for, stating that you wont repeat any business information outside of the office.. i.e. online, to friends, etc.

CJR..
I AM a Recruiter....so I was just passing along a tip. I get my information about this from my Industry and my colleagues. We use them all the time. Internet is not private. You are showing the world personal information.
http://www.utahtechjobs.com/index.php/2005/07/13/do-recruiters-go-after-bloggers/
Direct quote from Robert Merrill, a lead recruiter and consultant for executives at Utah Tech Jobs:
"I have used blogs to research my client companies a little, and I admit, one very angry blog from a potential candidate submarined his chances of being submitted for the interview (No, I didn’t go searching for him, he put the URL on his resume… of course I was going to check it out!"
There are several others...but I have to leave now..
I was just giving a tip, CJR..that's all...
(No, I didn’t go searching for him, he put the URL on his resume… of course I was going to check it out!"
Well that candidate is a moron. If his blog underlines the fact that he's not likeable and he advertises it on his resume, then that's his own lookout. But it's also a whole different ballgame than what your first post suggested, Di2.
I've heard of a case from a friend where someone at her workplace was actaully fired because of her blog, and she did NOT provide the people at her job with the link.
Did that case end with the fired person being awarded huge sums in compensation for unfair dismissal?

I wasn't saying you were wrong, I was just saying it sounded pretty absurd. Anything's possible these days.
And as for the idiot who put the URL to his blog on his resume, then he's just that: an idiot. What kind of fool puts the link to their online journal on their application or resume? UNLESS they're a critic and do reviews on it, or write short stories and it's relevant to the job their applying for. From what you said though, I gather it was just his personal blog and he's an ass. Did I mention yet that the guy who did that was an idiot? Just making sure I was clear.
And fyi, I know for a fact that it was illegal to fire that woman because of her blog unless she a. violated the terms of her contract in it, b. shared confidential information, or c. wrote that she intended to cause harm to other employees.
Ive kept a livejournal for years, as I said earlier in the thread, but it's always been more to keep up with friends I dont get to talk to very often. Very private things are meant to stay private... and they go in the real, pen and paper journal sitting on my night stand at home.

popcultureboy, I don't know the details, I just remember reading it from a friend's blog.

And this, children, is why you partition. Keep different blogs for anonymous rants and personal talk. Or better yet, don't let your RL name get attached to any online persona at all.

There was a livejournal user who was fired from her job as a Delta flight attendant due to her blog. Of course, she posted provocative photos of herself in her uniform on a Delta Plane on said blog, so in that case I can't exactly say she wasn't somewhat at fault.
I've been blogging for a few years now. I never mentioned anything about job last job (good or bad) until I left. My current jobs couldn't care less about what I post on my blog.
I like blogger. Very convenient. And tidy looking.

It's just a tip that's all. We have software where we can type in someone's name and look up lots of stuff. Companies these days are really looking for solid individuals when hiring and are very crafty when doing their research on a candidate.
