"The play became the subject of a heated debate this past spring when it was scheduled and then postponed at Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop. Both NYTW and the Royal Court were thrust into a press-statement war immediately after the decision to delay the work; the London-based company and the play's creators accusing the New York company of censorship while the New York troupe stating it merely sought to present the play in a climate suitable for the volatile work." - Playbill.
There are some articles around the internet I could grab, it's been a while but they are there. The creators felt it was censorship and I do too. This is not how show-business is supposed to work, not with freedom of speech. Racier things have gone through the doors at NYTW and this was just blocked.
You are right it is back, but I think that initial hesitation said enough.

Posted: 9/21/06 at 3:55pmit's their theatre. they decide what gets to play in their theatre. it's not censorship to say, "hey y'know what, we decided we're not so into you after all." censorship would be saying, "your play cannot play here or anywhere else." no one has done that. the word censorship is quickly losing all meaning in this world when everyone whose production is turned down is screaming censorship. it's not censorship when one entertainment venue declines to produce a show. it's censorship when people are told they cannot produce a show, not just in one theatre but anywhere. but it sure makes for great publicity to be the show that was "banned" doesn't it? even if that's a blatant lie and the censorship argument holds as much water as a swiss cheese thimble.

You say tomato, I say tomato. All I know is that I live in country where people use semantics to confuse, oppress and kill people and I hate it.
I should have never posted my question to you here, it detracts to the point of my thread. It is also a very small case of something that has nothing to do with the most important things happening in the world today.
Back to Chavez’s amazing speech. Please if you haven’t had a chance, read it. My favorite part is about US, “If we walk in the streets of the Bronx, if we walk around New York, Washington, San Diego, in any city, San Antonio, San Francisco, and we ask individuals, the citizens of the United States, what does this country want? Does it want peace? They'll say yes.”

Rachel Corrie teaching Palestinian youngsters rip American flags, hate America and, above all else, hate Jews.

This picture is taken completely out of context. (Where is your source?) It also has nothing to do with Hugo Chavez. That Corrie discussion is over on this thread. Besides, Rachel Corrie did not need to teach the Palestinians anything they didn't already believe. If you knew anything about their lives you would know the reason there is resentment towards Israel and the USA.
Maybe you should post a picture of one of our many leaders preaching Pro-Israeli rhetoric denouncing Muslims throughout the middle east.

None of her defenders have ever come up with a caption for that picture that changes my mind about her.
She was an idealistic girl who was genuinely moved by the plight of the Palestinians, which I cannot blame entirely on the Israeli government--I blame the corrupt Arafat regime and the governments of each and every Arab country, who never gave any of their oil revenues to help the Palestinian people (or many of their own peoiple!) but INSTEAD used the mythology of their victimhood to scapegoat the Jews and throw a self-serving smokescreen over the entire region.
Rachel got caught up in the mythology of that victimhood and ended up not as a peace worker, but as a hate monger.

papalovesmambo - I resent that remark with my Username and wish the world wasn't filled with ignorant souls like you.
Paljoey - I think using her as a token representative for either side of the argument (if there are only two sides) is wrong. She's just one person. I was talking about censorship and it had nothing to do with her personally. Right or wrong, I would see the play. I actually disagreed with most for the 9/11 ABC film but liked it.
You can blame every "corrupt Arafat regime and the governments of each and every Arab country," for the rampant poverty and oppression all you want, it does not make you right. What you do not know is the real history of the land, religions, culture and their governments or more importantly foreign involvement and imperialism involved. Even if what you were stating is true (and it's not), those were not the reasons the US was attacked on 9/11. They are also not reasons for the invasion of Lebanon or Iraq.
It's easy for you to sit here in the US and think things are black and white there, but they aren't Blanche, they aren't.

PalJoey -
I can predict your every move. Who didn't see that question coming? These are the same tired slants that are used by AIPAC.
OF COURSE I believe the Israel has the right to exist. That does not mean I think the Palestinians should have been relocated or forced to abide under a false Democracy. I also think Israel has the right to defend itself. That does not mean I think the US should supply the weapons and means to level a country it was rebuilding.

And when it comes to mind-reading PalJoey and condescending to PalJoey, if they asked Papa, he could write a book.
I am not AIPAC, mejust. Nor am I PNAC. You say
"This picture is taken completely out of context.
Okay, baby. Contextualize for me. That is positively Rachel herself in that photo, no Photoshop, no tricks. Put it in some context for me.
Please.

And for the record, I'll bet I know more about those things than you do. MUCH more.
And I'm not a betting man. Ask Papa.

Me - you just said you belive Israel has the right to defend itself, but that's where our friendship with them is a detriment.
Do you think Israel NEEDED to draw out its war against Hezbollah all that time? Do you think they couldn't have gone in in about a week and obliterated that group? It would have been messy, but they could have, unfortunately their hands were tied. They couldn't even do what they were "allowed" to do without the entire world looking on and running front page headlines every time innocent civilians were (tragically) killed in the cross fire. Meanwhile, Hezbollah was lobbing missile after missile into Israeli cities, TARGETING civilians.
Likewise with Arafat. Israel has an intelligence agency that makes our CIA look like the 3 Stooges. They could have eliminated Arafat years ago, but we stayed their hand time and time again, when we should have let them do what it was their right to do all along: defend themselves against terrorism.
And, furthermore...I also think that if Chavez is a hero to you, you should go on the ground in his country and talk to some of the people, there.

Posted: 9/21/06 at 6:10pmWhile I'm no fan of Chavez, I'll offer that he is an extremely articulate fellow. I listened to his speech in Spanish and it was rather riveting. That aside, it's quite obvious that he's positioning himself to become Castro's heir apparent. I'd hazard to say that he just might eclipse Castro in terms of influence throughout the region upon Castro's death.

Not bad, but nothing beats the original:
"It was a dark and stormy night; the rain fell in torrents--except at occasional intervals, when it was checked by a violent gust of wind which swept up the streets (for it is in London that our scene lies), rattling along the housetops, and fiercely agitating the scanty flame of the lamps that struggled against the darkness."

Birdlives – I am a Venezuelan American. My family lives here for reasons I will not get into, they have nothing to do with Chavez, more to do with the US actually. So yes I know the people there, and yes I know how they feel. I know many people rich and poor that live under Chavez.
I am too tired to respond to Papa and Paljoey. If someone other than them is actually reading this, please, please... I know my grammar is not perfect. But listen, there is a lot going on in the world today. The USA has the power to do good. The USA is doing bad if not evil things. (I’m sounding like Bush) What Chavez said is TRUE! in this speech, there is no debate in with his words as it is factual. You can debate his character or his reputation all you want. The words he said are true, they are facts. There will be no debate about that; all you will see in the media is that he is crazy and blah, blah, blah. Go ahead say he is, ask Bush what he really feels about blacks and hispanics or even poor white people.
Don’t let the tail wag the dog. I ask Pal Joey and Papa to show me something that is not true in his speech. Good luck in finding fault in facts. All they can do is wag the dog.
My stance on Israeli policy is controversial here, though it shouldn’t be as most of Europe agrees. There is no denying the Israeli lobbies have great power in this country and where your tax dollars are going. These are facts.
I’m not going to argue anymore because that is pointless. I do not spout lies or conspiracy theories.
I will not use Rachel Corrie as any example; I used the play as an example of censorship, though I labeled it as being banned. I was wrong in saying it was banned, but I still believe it was censored.
I hope that as artists and people who support the arts here, we will do what they can to spread Chavez’s important message. He is not trying to start a war, or take away our SUV’s, he is trying to make peace and heal the world.
They are words, not bombs. Our country uses bombs not words and that is wrong and does not work.
