For my money, Rove is the one who smells of brimstone.

>>The only thing true in that speech was admitting the uselessness of the U.N.
The UN is useless because the USA has rendered it so. We use it when we need a cover, and condemn it when it is useless to us.
>>>Chavez is a quack and I can safely say that after many >>discussions with family members still living in South >>America. They all think he's nuts, too, for whatever it's >>worth.
Whether he's crazy or not is not the point. The words that came out of his mouth were TRUE. They were facts, and guess what they are meaningful.
Chavez is very popular in South America. But people are on all sides of the fence about every leader. Did you ask them what you think about Bush? Bush LIES and he is a stupid former drunk.
I don't understand what your angle is? You don't want a UN, and you condemn Chavez by way of people in South America. The very same people that are begging the world for a working UN. What's wrong with one crazy leader offering legit criticism for something that is obviously corrupt? He's not suggesting he has all the answers, he wants the world leaders to come together and find them.

*sigh* of COURSE the U.S. is why the UN is useless, it's ALWAYS the U.S. at fault, right?
I obviously can't speak for all South Americans, but my family that I talk to in Uruguay have no problems with Bush. I (and they, for that matter) still don't see what he "LIED" about, but I am so not going there. Yeah, i'm done with giving my political opinions for now, but I just don't understand if you HATE it here so much, why you don't chose go live in Venezuela instead? It's baffling.

Can I just say that even the thought of Venezuelan chocolate gives me an erection? Can I say that?
I know this out of the way Venezuelan restaurant that makes the most delicious arepas and for dessert, the obligatory and cliche "molten chocolate cake" rendered new and delicious with pure Venezuelan chocolate. Mmmmmmm. Excuse me, I have to go find my AstroGlide.

Posted: 9/22/06 at 11:55amMaybe we can all agree about the fact that it's stupid to classify people, countries and such as "good" and "evil" in the first place. These aren't medieval times any more. Putting the debate on a rational level would be a first step...

LOL - I never said I hate it here. I actually the LOVE the USA, more than you know. I do not like the political climate we live in here. As Americans we have a voice and a choice. Isnt' that what freedom is? Isn't that the very thing we should love?
You should watch that "if you don't like it here" crap, some people take offense to it. My favorite quote from the Katrina Spike Lee doc.. it went something like this: "White people always telling me to go back to Africa, Hell No!" LOL
Hmmm... Bush's lies. Well there are MANY. Since I was talking about Katrina I will address a lie there. —Bush declared four days after the storm, "I don't think anybody anticipated the breach of the levees" that gushed deadly flood waters into New Orleans. You know what? Bush was briefed that this exact thing could happen one day before on the 28th. There is a video tape!

Posted: 9/22/06 at 1:09pmI was also gratified that he pointed out the uselessness of the UN. Aside from the mid-east there are horrifying genocidal activities going on around the globe and the UN has been completely ineffectual. I also long for a vital, effective world body. And as a New Yorker, I can frankly say that I would welcome a relocation. It is a blight on the city.

The UN is a joke, now. Witness the suffering in Sudan. They have a Human Rights Council, on which sit a number of the worst human rights abusers. Syria was on their security council.
The US has not rendered the UN useless. In fact, if the UN were the organization it should be, the US would be it's greatest ally. For the most part, we do the work they were intended to do.
You've said that what the world needs are words, and that all we do is drop bombs. Well, words preceed any war. Words escalate conflict. Iran's president saying in front of the world (and, this IS fact) that he will wipe Israel off the face of the earth is part of the reason Israel is taking a hardline stance against their neighbors in that region. The destruction of Israel is in the very charter of Hezbollah. You will not reach those people with words.
Israel has every right to defend itself against those things. If I had a neighbor that was threatening to kill me every day, I wouldn't wait for them to attack my family. I would prepare myself to take action.
Again, the things he says in his speech are opinions, not facts. It's his perception, and it jibes with yours, so you feel it to be true. These are not facts.

birdlives, - You are leaving out very important details. Iran is not the reason Israel says it invaded Lebanon. Though I despise Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he said he would retaliate by "wiping Israel off the Map" if provoked. What he is alluding to is "self-defense," something Israel prides itself in. Iran doesn't have the bomb, Israel does, you don't have to be a scientist to know who would win. Ahmadinejad is crazy but not an idiot. I don't need to defend him, diplomacy will hopefully end any future problems we have with Iran. No bombs.
What opinion? Show me? I will show you a fact
The US, has resources and the power to nurture an effective world body in the UN. Have we? No! The UN is a fair weather friend to us. As far as Sudan, the only reason the US has not intervened is because Sudan does not have any resources to offer us. It poses no threat to the state of Israel. Everyone knows the UN's powers are useless. Look at how effective they were in stopping our war in Iraq, or even the atrocities in Lebanon. Hell if you only knew what has been done in South America in the past 8 years under the watchful eye of the USA.
Read something other than the New York Times for once. You sound like a very ignorant American. Do you actually think the world is headed in the right direction?

mejust...you may not know it but one of the biggest debating flaws on the Internet is "asserting opinion as fact." It is as sure-fire a way to lose an argument as is calling someone a Nazi.
Something may seem like a fact to you and simply not be a fact to the people you are chatting with. The more you assert "This is a FACT," the more you look like a hot-head. (Believe me, I know.)
If you want to persuade people of different minds, you'll have to find ways to be persuasive. If all you want to do is rally and energize people of like mind (as is usually the case with me), then go on doing exactly what you're doing.
And I guess Namo and I share a fondness for Venezuelan, um, chocolate. Namey--pass the AstroGlide?

"And as a New Yorker, I can frankly say that I would welcome a relocation."
It's funny you should bring that up. Last night I was having a quasi-political discussion with someone and we wondered if the U.N. will eventually transfer to Europe. What do you all think?

MeJust - in my opinion, part of the reason we haven't done anything in the Sudan is that Bush botched things up with the war in Iraq and now our resources are spread too thin, and we also can not afford to "go it alone" like so many accused us of the last time. had we gone immediately into Darfur and done what we should have, we would have still inevitably come under fire for it.......from the UN.
they prefer to have sanctions, and councils, and referendums. we prefer actions.
and, it's funny, i sound like an ignorant American to you. i never thought i'd share a side of an issue with Charlie Rangel. you should look up what even very liberal democrats are saying about Chavez, today.
and you say i should stop reading the New York Times...i don't even aim THAT high. i read The Post, it's so much easier to fold up while standing on the train. and, it has Page 6.
