I know I'm probably going to be ripped to shreds for saying this but I don't think this is a terrible idea.
Beyonce is a good actress (who is getting better with each film she does...she is really strong in CADILLAC RECORDS and was surprisingly effective in DREAMGIRLS) with a great voice. I think with the right training, she could pull it off. It's probably not going to get her an Oscar nomination (she needs way more training before that can happen) but I don't know...I think this could work.

This remake, which is said to be an "urban" re-imagining that involves an established rap star falling for an upcoming r&b songstress, has been in the works for ages.
Joel Schumacher was developing it for Columbia Pictures about six years ago. His version would have starred Will Smith (who was also going to produce it) and Jennifer Lopez.
Lopez ended up dropping out due to a scheduling conflict before she was able to sign on the dotted line. Though Alicia Keys was briefly perused to replace her, the project ultimately fell through.

Good - another film I can plan on not seeing.

When I saw the thread title, my immediate reaction was "With Hugh Jackman on Broadway?"
I've actually never seen a version of this movie, but I don't really find Beyonce compelling and that seems important.
After doing extensive research on Eartha Kitt, I'm more disappointed at that prospect. This IS a fabulous bio choice for a movie, but I just don't know if Beyonce has the toughness for the audience to believe she has gone through everything Kitt has. I don't know who I would cast otherwise, though.
havent we already had a dodgy urban version in the form of Glitter with Mariah Carey

An "urban" version? This is going to suck. They're going to try so hard to make it "urban" that they're not going to pay attention to details like performances or storyline, and the movie will fail.
Joel Shumacher should have a restraining order put on him. He should not be allowed to come within 500 feet of any motion picture camera, set, screenplay, production meeting, or location.
Judy Garland's "A Star Is Born" is one of my top five films of all time and so elegantly powerful that I sincerely doubt another film could ever come close to touching it.
I think there could be a new version of ASIB that would be moving and contemporary. I doubt this will be it.
