With the POTO song, she used so much black eye shadow when she closed her eyelids she looked like someone had removed the eyes from their sockets
Why wasn't she allowed to sing all the numbers, do the hosting duties, tabulate the ballots & conduct the orchestra ?

Glad I could make you laugh, Albin.
And the Phantom's appearance...oy. Ridiculous. And people wonder why the musical numbers at the Oscars get laughed at...

"but what does Antonio singing another song have to do with anything?"
He was supposed to be the Phantom! (and he could have sung ALW's song better than Bouncy).

I was pleasantly surprised by Beyonce. I saw her sing the first two songs, but didn't catch the last one. I don't speak French, so I cannot comment on her dialect, but she proved to me that she can sing a song straight without all the R&B embellishments. She also made Learn to Be Lonely far more attractive than what appears on the CD. And she showed that she could BELT! I did not expect to be as impressed as I was by her singing.
PS - There are French singers who have recorded songs in English with poor pronunciation as well. It goes both ways. If you want to blame someone, don't blame Beyonce. She doesn't speak French, so how would she know? Blame whoever coached her for the song for not teaching her proper pronunciation. Sheesh!

I do not think Beyonces jewelry in the POTO number was big enough

Posted: 2/28/05 at 6:16pm::shrugs:: honestly, I thought Minnie driver did fine on the cast recording, then again, ive never heard her sing anything live, so I shouldnt be saying anything

I've seen Minnie sing live (well, not in person, but singing on talk shows) and I enjoyed her. She has a very Sarah Maclaughlan (sp)/Dido tone.
As for Beyonce...I didn't listen to all of the French song; I speak Quebecois French and I picked up most of what she was saying, I think it's unfair to judge her on her pronounciation. Celine Dion still says 'appy instead of "happy" for chrissake. I would have preferred Minnie singing Lonely, a) because I think it suits her voice better; b) she performed it for the movie! I don't mind Beyonce in general, but I think she was out of her element here.

Yeah, same here Tiff. Well, I can understand both types of French, so yeah I picked up on some mistakes, but overall, the French song did well with her.
Just not Phantom.

'Beyonce's jewelry looked fake to me.'
If only her fur coats were fake *sigh*
Just checking up on this thread one day after the Oscars.
I wasn't very impressed with Beyonce either. I thought she did an ok job but her facial expressions were just ridiculous... talking about trying too hard to be sexy.
I didn't actually think Sean Penn was trying to be an arse when he 'corrected' Chris Rock about Jude Law. I guess he just wanted to 'air' his support which worked for me.
I actually thought Chris was very funny but some of his jokes (especially dissing actors at the Oscars) fell a bit flat.

okay, after my original rant about beyonce, let me go back and reformulate a more articulate response.
i did not enjoy beyonce's performances, whatsoever. mind you, she can sing her hiphop stuff probably better than anyone else can, but when she's not given the chance to do her riffs and runs and other weird things - i think she definitely falls short.
in terms of her french, it really was abysmal. and yeah, celine dion doesn't speak perfect english, but i don't listen to her music either. seriously, why not have someone french do it? there are so many amazing french singers, and you could see how incredibly nervous she was with the language. i think it was really under par for such a huge event.
and the whole "sexy" thing and the arm gestures with "learn to be lonely" were a little too much for me. if she can change her style to not do the riffs and runs - her arms shouldn't be doing them either.
that's my take. and for those of you who think i'm jealous, so be it. i'm really not. i wouldn't want to sing in that style, it's not my thing.

My two cents about this thread:
I did think they were trying to make her look like a chandelier in that one number with the ridiculous jewelry.
Not that Beyonce is the greatest vocalist ever, but Lord knows I'd rather listen to her than Celine Dion.
