Posted: 2/28/05 at 1:42amRock's retort didn't even make sense. My accountants will be talking to you? What was that supposed to mean?
#77re: Beyonce: what the hell?!
Posted: 2/28/05 at 1:48amEarlier in the show Chris introduced these two huge men as his accountants. Well in his reply to Sean he said that his accountants want to have a talk with Sean as in they were gonna whoop the snot out of him.

Posted: 2/28/05 at 1:50amI got that joke, but I just didn't think it was funny. And yeah, Sean Penn takes things way too seriously. I imagined Jude Law thinking "Just shut the fu*k up, Sean."

Posted: 2/28/05 at 2:01amIf the Oscars were on HBO Sean woulda got ripped to shreds by Chris Rock, which he probably will in his next stand-up gig.
#82re: Beyonce: what the hell?!
Posted: 2/28/05 at 2:05amI'm sure Chris had some real serious words about that afterwards. Penn needs to take the stick outta his behind..

Hate.
Hate Hate Hate.
There was no reason for her to sing any of those songs.
And Josh Groban was perfectly capable of handling that song on his own.
(although that third dress of hers was gorgeous)
I just don't understand.
Couldn't they have gotten two other singers so she wouldn't have mucked up 3 songs?

She always looked amazing - and it's not that she's a bad singer - I just feel she was in over her head. I would have loved to hear Barbra perform it - since she was there anyway.
I didn't think Sean Penn was too harsh - the Oscar is the most coveted award in the entertainment industry. Many think of it as the epitome of class and refinement, and a celebration of film. It's not that I'm anti-Rock, but I didn't think he should have said such harsh things about certain people - especially when comparing people like Jude Law to Tom Cruise. I just thought it was disrespectful, and unfunny. I'm very happy that Sean Penn stepped up and said something - I'm sure that Sean Penn and myself weren't the only ones that thought Rock's jokes could have been a little more tactful.

It sounded like the Polar Express sojng was put in a lower key for Beyonce'. Groban was definitely having trouble hitting the low notes.
I was surprised that Chris Rock never mentioned that he has been in some really GOOD, well-respected films, such as Nurse Betty, where he played opposite Morgan Freeman. After all, there was a large portion of the audience who were thinking, "Who the hell is this guy and why is he the host?"
By the way, I liked "Pootie Tang".

Posted: 2/28/05 at 11:13amHaving Rock as host means humor and fun. If it needs to be taken seriously, then it goes back to the boring spectacle it's been for many years. Shaking things up is great sometimes.

Beyonce is a very talented and beautiful singer. She is just overexposed right now. There was no reason for her to be featured on 3 of the Oscar songs last night.
Jon, you are correct. "Believe", the song from "Polar Express", was put in a lower key to accomodate Beyonce's voice. She did a nice job with it. However, Josh seemed to struggle with the octave change on his own song.

Posted: 2/28/05 at 11:30amGroban has, I believe, gotten in a bit over his head.
#91re: Beyonce: what the hell?!
Posted: 2/28/05 at 11:37amBeyonce was excellent, as I knew she would be.
#92re: Beyonce: what the hell?!
Posted: 2/28/05 at 11:41amI'll agree that she didn't really need to sing "Belive". However, he is slightly boring (if very talented), and they did have really nice harmony.

Yep, Groban was digging too hard for those low notes. If they had made it his solo in the right key, it would had soared....or bring in a more suitable partner. Where is Celine Dion when you need her?
Jon, were you eating popcorn in bed with me during the awards? I was chillin' with my daughter-in-law at her apt. Frist stanza into "Learn to Be Lonely" we both blurted out "Linda Eder" would make this worth hearing!
And I'm not dissing Chris Rock. Oscars can be longest day into night...but others have pulled it off with better placed humor for "that" crowd. There were hints of racial support going in the casting and the crowd, imho. Let's just leave it at that. This is supposed to be about "best in show" , or so I thought.

What MORON made the decision to have Beyonce sing the song from Les Choristes. Now, I think she is a very talented young lady, but anyone who knows a lick of French knows that her prononciation was an insult to the language. Everyone in my family is fluent and my mother is a french teacher; we were all horrified. If they had to have her singing so many songs, why oh WHY did that one have to be one of them.
On a lighter note, the little boys were great!
#97re: Beyonce: what the hell?!
Posted: 2/28/05 at 1:45pmI enjoyed the french song, even though it was a linguistic failure. It was a beautiful performance. Italians hate going to the opera for the same reason. Perhaps Celine couldn't make it out from Vegas to sing it.

Speaking from Quebec...there are more french chanteuses in the world than Celine.
Again, how about the person who recorded it?
#99re: Beyonce: what the hell?!
Posted: 2/28/05 at 4:34pmEhh...I'm kind of indifferent towards it...I would have liked to have seen only the boys sing the French song though. =)
