Amazing Stunning Brilliant

Who would have guessed the years best movie would be a sequel to a 30 year old masterpiece. Gosling is magnificent as K. In fact the less you know the better.

Get a ticket , see it on the biggest screen you can find. It’s masterful film making  at its finest

It's amazing how excited I am about this movie, considering I'm not a particular fan of the original movie or of Villeneuve, and I really don't like Ryan Gosling.

Amazing Stunning Brilliant

Even Jared Leto? He seems to be a bit over-the-top intense, which I know has been his bag recently, but it just seems to jar with the more subtle & moody performances of everybody else - at least judging by the trailer.

I am excited though.

You know I had no idea it was Jared Leto , he wasn’t as over the top as he normally is

I am very disappointed in this film. The future created in the original is, at least, recognizable. So I am bothered by a vision of the future, only one generation along, where nothing of today's world exists. I'm glad you loved it. I was bored to tears.

What? The original is set in 2019. That's fifteen months from now. I don't think LA is going to bear any resemblance whatsoever to the the city portrayed in Blade Runner. I was actually just re-watching and laughed at the futuristic billboard for Pan Am. I guess it's about suspension of disbelief.

I've still to see 2049 but am sad to see it underperformed at the box office. Scott Menelson from Forbes thinks their spoiler paranoia and obsessive plot secrecy backfired.

Moreover, Alcon Entertainment was so draconian about plot details, both in the marketing and the reviews, that consumers were merely presented with “Hey, it’s a Blade Runner sequel, Harrison Ford is back, Ryan Gosling is here, and it looks gorgeous!”

I saw it one of those Dolby Cinemas which I thought turned out to be a great choice! It really heightened the sound! My seat was vibrating.

I do think it was a tad too long. It just seemed like it wasn’t getting anywhere until the final act.

Do we really know this won’t make money? It only came out this weekend.

Look, my opinion is just my opinion. The reviews have been very good. No one guesses the future correctly. I can't. But I believe that in 2049 what we see will not be so vastly different from today just as today isn't so vastly different from 1980. SPOILER ( that Panam billboard is still there in 2049) go figure.

I mainly had a real problem with the pace of the film and the way the music built into crescendo over stuff that was telegraphed way in advance.

The movie is long, slow and dense. It is an Indy/art-house movie with a blockbuster budget, cast and genre. I’d be surprised if this resonated with a wide audience. They have not ‘hollywoodised’ this as much as I would have anticipated. I enjoyed it - loved the visuals, complex story with a lot of moving parts/turns,  commentary on AI/what is means to be alive/what is real/what is human etc. but I can’t say this is the kind of movie that is easy watching. You need patience.

Give me claws and a hunch, just away from this bunch.

Sure, and I respect your opinion. I was just a little puzzled by your assertion that the original (set two years from now) is recognizable as LA is all.

I'm glad your optimistic about the world of 2049 too, hopefully the planet won't be a wasteland destroyed by overpopulation/nuclear war/climate change etc. etc.

I liked it but was under whelmed. Oh the sets and costumes were a glory but the plot-   meander is a kind word.

Gosling was great  he is so stoic that when he does smile it really lights up the screen.  If Ford gets any more craggy  I think he will have to become part of Mt Rushmore. Jared Leto was fine but boy his dialogue/monologues were tot's OTT.  love how Robin Wright has had this whole renaissance and this film contributes to that.

Villleneuve  nicely references the original in many ways  but i see lots of bits from other sci fi stories.

Oh and stop complaining about the dates- who says this is OUR Earth this is taking place on any way?

I swore after nodding off during Mad Max Fury Road that I was done with tent poles depicting future dystopia on screen but find myself mildly intrigued by the BR 2049 trailers.

In all, I thought it was great. I was indifferent in the theater, but as time went on, I realized how much I enjoyed it. I will say, however, that I wish this is an isolated sci-fi film with no ties to the original Blade Runner, perhaps not even in the same universe. I felt the connections are what bogged the film down.

I saw it last night, and reservations about misogyny aside, I have to say I enjoyed it a lot.

With the long running time, I had prepared myself for a slog, but I actually didn't feel it - and it looked beautiful all the way through. It took so long for Harrison Ford to show up I almost forgot he was in it at all, but it was worth the wait even if he was just playing the same character he always plays.

I only wish they had made Ryan's character gay. It would have avoided some icky objectifying of women issues, and let's face it, would have been hot as hell. Do they even program replicants to be gay? Where can I get me a Ryan Gosling sex hologram? Do gay people still exist in 2049 or has Mike Pence successfully wiped us all out?

It would have been nice to see Wallace get his comeuppance in the same way that Tyrell got his eyes gouged out in the original.

Hmm...so I guess this movie conclusively answers the question that, yes, Deckard is a replicant? I knew that we were lead to believe that he likely was, but it was nice to still wonder.

Aw, sad that Rachel died in childbirth, again kinda ruining the ending of the original where we were lead to believe that she had been spared in order to give Deckard a chance at happiness and that they might live a natural lifespan together.

The scene in the Las Vegas hotel with the Elvis hologram was my favorite.

I guess that's it.

I don't really think the replicant question has truly been answered. ( may be leaning towards but not fully answered)  I mean  interspecies dating exists. but

Whether or not such offspring  are able to reproduce is another question. A horse and a donkey can get big ideas but all u get is a mule. so unless there is ( heaven for fend!) a sequel I'm going w a firm maaaybe.

The movie represents a dystopian future that we probably don’t want to live in  - not a model of feminist accomplishment. The way women are ‘objectified’ at times seems completely plausible for how a future could look like if feminist progress is not achieved.

I re-watched the original on cable tv last night.  Still don't think its the best of its genre, thanks to the pacing & acting, but clearly one of the most influential.  Ghost in the Shell is littered with BR references.

I saw this over the weekend and it's really stuck with me. Visually stunning, totally imaginative, thoughtful and deliberate. Ryan Gosling is perfect in these stoic roles that eventually crack.

I see the arguments against its depiction of women- but at the same time, women drive the story and make up the majority of the main cast. Joi, the hologram "girlfriend," is a particularly interesting character, particularly...

towards the end of the film, when K is addressed by the massive Joi advertisement that reveals that perhaps everything his Joi told him was simply part of her design, even the name she gave him.

Yes the movie is even more Phillip K. Dick than the first with the wheels within wheels of real vs simulacra. and the 1st was pretty faithful. There are echoes of Aldiss's "Super Toys Last all Summer"  which became "A .I. ' and even some Asimov esp w the flouting of the 1st law of robotics.(A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.)

I do feel we are to think about Joi but also remember

She tells him to break the monitor to remove her presence and use only the motivator  leaving her vulnerable ( and we know how that worked out!) and of course her last line.

I keep coming back to my firm maaaaayyyy be.

Which, I think is just what the creatives wanted.
